Roy Hassell Taylor

Mr. Roy Taylor, 83, of Araby, died Thursday, March 16, 2023. He was the loving husband of Barbara Taylor for 58 years.

Born December 20, 1939 in Masontown, WV. He was the son of the late Dantes Taylor Shaffer, Earl Shaffer and step father Wayne Shaffer.

Roy graduated from Masontown High School (1957) and lettered in baseball he finished high school a year early. He continued his education at West Virginia University, where he hitch hiked to class daily also graduating a year early (1960). After marring his sweetheart; Barb, they co owned several race horses, a passion Roy had until his passing. He worked for Army Audit Agency, GAO and retired from the Dept. of Energy (1998). After retirement, Roy and Barb opened, owned and operated the DQ of Riverbend. Also, he owned Absolute Lead Paint Inspections with his daughter; Donna.

Roy was very active in many civic associations, charities, clubs and the Frederick LDS Church. They include Araby/Monocacy/ Urbana Jr. Hawks Baseball and Softball, The Heartbreakers, MD Express Softball, Frederick Kiwanis, UVFD, FCGSL, FCMC, URC, Frederick Midget Football, Carroll Manor Baseball and Softball and Twirletts Majorettes.

In addition to his wife, Roy is survived by his children; Bunny Sue Rose (Eugene), Jennifer Christine East (John), Donna Winifred Taylor, Patricia Ann Bates (Ryan), Andrew Peter Taylor and Cheryl Lynn Taylor-Howell (Oneil), grandchildren; Heather Staley (Billy), Bailey Sartori, Abbigayle Sartori, McKenna Taylor, Miles East, Dylan East, Craig "CJ" Haslam, Donna Bates, Zachary Bates, Brooke Taylor, Calvin Taylor, Mya Howell, Aliyah Howell and Mariah Howell, great granddaughter; Lauren Grace Staley, siblings; Loraine, Wayne, Eugene, Mary, Cora Lee, Nellie, Judy, Linda, Donnie and George, numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his special friends; Woody and Pat Fisher, Mike Ausherman, Gary Rice, Ron Pearcey, and ALL of his Araby and DQ family.

He was preceded in death by sons; Michael Leroy Taylor and Adam Lee Taylor, grandmother; Cora Taylor "Granny"; father and mother in-law: John and Violet Winston, siblings; James, Jeanie and Richard, close family; Russell Shaffer, Vivian and Nathan Taylor.

The family will receive friends from 3pm to 7pm, on Wednesday, March 22, 2023 at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church Street, Frederick. The funeral service will be held at 10am, on Thursday, March 23, 2023 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 199 North Place, Frederick. Please wear your WVU/Redskins or team jersey or hat that Roy coached. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Roy Taylor's name to the Greater Urbana Area Food Bank, 4328 Reels Mill Road, Frederick, MD 21704, Araby Baseball & Softball 4214 Araby Church Road, Frederick, MD 21704, Urbana Volunteer Fire Department, 3602 Urbana Pike, Frederick, MD 21704 and Frederick Kiwanis (Community Foundation of Frederick, 312 E. Church Street, Frederick, MD 21701).

Roy's passion was mentoring, advising and coaching youth in sports and life.
