Jonathan Mark Angel of Middletown, MD passed away peacefully at home on Monday, March 10, 2025. He was the cherished husband of Lindell K. (Lindy) Angel for over 30 years.
Jon was born March 2, 1956, in Tampa, Florida to Paul H., Jr. and Elizabeth Gerig Angel (deceased) and grew up in an Air Force family. Known for his sense of humor and big heart, he had a laugh that would bring down the house. Jon enjoyed and was competitive in many sports during his lifetime, including his years as a forward on the Sherwood High School basketball team Sandy Spring, MD and as a member of a regular group of players at the Tennis barn, in Frederick, MD. He was a loyal and devoted fan of his beloved Boston Red Sox and the Green Bay Packers. He also loved golf and NASCAR racing, and travel with his beautiful wife, Lindy. More recently, he enjoyed attending AQHA horse shows with his wife.
Jon graduated in 1974 from Sherwood High School and in 1984 earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting from East Tennessee State University (Deans List, Cum Laude). He served a three year tour in the U.S. Navy as an Intelligence Specialist, and continued beyond that in the Naval Reserves for 6 years. His work career included several years at Skigen Associates an accounting firm in Rockville before moving to Frederick where he worked in the Finance and Personnel Departments and eventually was promoted to Budget Director for the City of Frederick serving many mayors before retiring in 2008. After retirement, he joined his wife Lindy in opening Angelcakes and Cupcakes Bakery on East Church St. in Everedy Square. In 2013, Jon suffered a debilitating stroke but continued to love and laugh with all around him.
In addition to his wife, Jon will be greatly missed by his surviving family; sister, Kathryn Whitcomb (John) of Martinsburg, WV, brother, Paul H. Angel III (Lynn) of Prince Frederick, MD, sister, Rosemary Wolfe of Frederick, MD and brother, George S. Angel (Barbara) of Laytonsville, MD. Mother-in-law Laura M. Henson, Jefferson, MD and sisters-in-law Jolynn Wright, and Shari Pennewell (Tom) of Missouri. He was idolized by nephews Ben, Sam and Dan Whitcomb and families, and Alex and Cory Angel.
He was preceded in death by his son, Derek Matthew Angel, father- in law, Harold B. (Kap) Henson and brother-in-law, Charles “Rick” Wolfe.
Jon’s family will receive friends at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home 106 E. Church St., Frederick from 4pm to 7pm. on Thursday, March 13, 2025. The funeral service and interment will be private.
