John Calvin "Butch" Gladhill, 77, of Middletown and Hagerstown died on January 4th, 2024, at his Middletown residence, the place of his birth on May 16, 1946.
He was the son of Mark Elwood Gladhill and Helen Rohrer Gladhill. He grew up and was educated in Middletown and, after earning his B.A. in Art from Shepherd University, he taught art at Middletown Elementary School for 38 years.
John was involved in numerous civic and cultural organizations including the J. Elmer Harp Medical Center, the Middletown Historical Society, the Central Maryland Heritage League, the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, the Men's Garden Club of Frederick and was a proud member of the Sons of the American Revolution.
He was an avid supporter and collector of art.
John was predeceased by his beloved sister, Judy, and is survived by brother Alan of Middletown, nephew Matthew Phillips, wife Erika and sons Bryce and Keane of Idaho, niece Valerie Wilson, fiance Danny Cass of Michigan and her sons Andrew and Ryan of Colorado and his brother-in-law, Roger Phillips of Arizona.
John will be lovingly remembered by his students, community members, close friends and especially by his dear friend and life partner Michael Reed and the Reed family of Hampstead, MD.
Visitation will be held at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, from 4-7 on Friday, January 12th, followed by the service Saturday at 11 AM at Zion Lutheran Church in Middletown.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to the organizations that John supported would be appreciated.
