Donald R. Wilhite, Col USAF Ret.

On the morning of Jan 28, 2023, Don passed away at home from a long illness. He is survived by his loving wife Lora, his children Sarah and Jimmy,  his sister Linda Richelson and brother Jim Wilhite, wife Patti, his nieces Sandra Salinas, Alison Wiedau, and Emily Chwastiak. He was predeceased by his parents Ralph and Ann, son Mack and sister Barbara Berens.

He was born in Plattsburgh NY and raised in Belleville IL. A proud graduate of the Univ of IL, he began his 28-year career with the military in 1982 as a Distinguished Graduate from the USAF Navigator Training Program and he went on to serve in numerous Command positions throughout his service, both stateside and Europe. Don loved to travel and be outdoors.  He was an avid outdoorsman, bicyclist, skier and hiker. He enthusiastically led his family on trips that turned into epic adventures resulting in many family stories. Don took great joy in following his children’s athletic growth, coaching his daughter’s softball team and son’s flag football, taking frequent trips across Europe to attend his children’s sporting events. He also had a passion for American military history which he shared with his family, and a love of his family pets.  Famously known for his rootbeer floats, a Rock-n-Roll and Blues fan, and his love for the fighting Illini basketball team.

A memorial service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the ALS Association (ALS.ORG).
