Ruth H Hubbell

Mrs. Ruth H. Hubbell, 88, formerly of Vickerman Hill Road, Mohawk, NY, died Sunday, June 27, 2010 at Glade Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Walkersville, MD, where she recently resided. She was predeceased by her husband of 51 years, Stephen H. Hubbell in 1997. Born May 30, 1922 in Spokane, Washington, she was the daughter of George W. and Marion Lock Howell. She was a graduate of Nottingham High School in Syracuse, NY and Syracuse University. She married Stephen H. Hubbell on June 29, 1946 in Syracuse. They met while teaching at Mohawk Central School, where Ruth taught Home Economics for several years. Ruth and Steve also owned and operated Hubbell's Nursery and Garden Center in Mohawk for 40 years. While living in Mohawk, Ruth was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Minnowbrook Garden Club, Mohawk Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, Flower Show Judge in District 5 New York of the Federated Garden Clubs of U.S., United Polka League of the Mohawk Valley, and committee member and past superintendent of the Flower Show Department of the Herkimer County Fair. Ruth will be remembered for her love of gardening, her talent and care in growing beautiful roses and her ability to create lovely flower arrangements. Ruth is survived by three children, Nancy Whitney and husband, Joe, of Jefferson, MD; Carol Tanczos and husband, Bob, of Statesville, NC; and Alan Hubbell and wife, Valerie, of Pennellville, NY; grandchildren, Amy Whitney and Gary Hodges of Ithaca; Jana Lamonica and husband, Rob, of Shippensburg, PA; Stephen Whitney and wife, Lauren, of Silver Spring, MD; Suzanne Bleakley and husband, Tom, of Cary, NC; Melinda Sullivan, and husband, Don, of Charlotte, NC; Danielle Lanning of Pennellville; and Alaina Hubbell, also of Pennellville. Also surviving are her great-grandchildren, Sara, Allison and Leann Lamonica of Shippensburg; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Hubbell of Montour Falls, NY. In addition to her husband, Ruth was predeceased by a sister, Jean Fotheringham of Santa Clarita, California in 2009. A memorial service will begin at 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 4th at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 3864 Jefferson Pike, Jefferson, MD 21755. Officiating will be Rev. Katrina L. Holland. Inurnment will be at the convenience of the family at Mountain View Memorial Gardens, Shells Bush Road, Little Falls, NY. Arrangements are being handled by Keeney & Basford Funeral Home, 106 E.
