Richard Kenneth Miller Sr

Mr. Richard Kenneth Miller Sr., "Rich Miller," 87, a longtime resident of Frederick, passed away Tuesday, July 6, 2010, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Baltimore following major heart surgery. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Betty Colleen Miller, who died March 28, 2004. Born March 31, 1923, in Baltimore, he was the youngest son of the late William and Myrtle Jane Mullinix Miller. Following his mother's death Dec. 22, 1933, Richard and his siblings were raised in Claggetsville by their great-aunt and great-uncle, Alice and Sam Warfield. During World War II, Richard was a staff sergeant with the U.S. Army in the Surgeon General's Office at the Pentagon. After his military service, Richard and his family were residents of Union Bridge, where he was well-known for the Hamilton Chevrolet dealership. He also served as a president of the Union Bridge Chamber of Commerce. He was in the automobile business for 22 years, which included Miller Rambler in Frederick. He was a graduate of the Missouri Auctioneer School and was a real estate broker before his retirement. For several years, he was a coach for the Breakfast Optimist Club Minor League "Greensocks" team in Frederick. Richard was a member of Mount Carmel United Methodist Church, but in recent years attended the First United Methodist Church of Greencastle, Pa. For many years, he enjoyed spending Sundays dancing at Pen Mar Park. He regularly traveled to auto auctions with his son-in-law, David, and also was a well-known antique parts vendor at various AACA meets stretching from Pennsylvania to North Carolina. Richard is survived by his son, Richard Kenneth Miller Jr., of NMS Healthcare of Hagerstown; his daughter, Mary Alice Stup and husband, R. David Stup; a granddaughter, Amanda E. Morrow; and a former sister-in-law, Margaret Routzahn Miller, all of Frederick; and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his loving companion, Dorothy J. Reed of Greencastle. He was predeceased by his brother, William Warfield Miller, and his sister, Mary Frances Kuster. The family will receive friends from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, July 9, at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church Street, Frederick. Services will begin at 11 a.m. from the funeral home chapel. Officiating will be the Rev. Stacy A. Crawford of First UMC of Greencastle. Interment will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Providence United Methodist Church, 3735 Kemptown Church Road, Monrovia, MD 21770; First UMC of Greencastle, 105 W.
