Dr. Sherman Kahan

Dr. Sherman Kahan, 68, of Frederick, died Tuesday, December 24, 2013 at the Frederick Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his loving family, after an extended illness. Born April 16, 1945 in Baltimore, he was a son of the late Jacob Leib and Anne Rappaport Kahan. Sherman grew up in Baltimore, graduating from Talmudical Academy at aged 16. He then went onto complete his Bachelors of Science in Zoology at the University of Maryland. After that, he entered Medical School at the University of Maryland, eventually specializing in Cardiology. He loved being a cardiologist, as it was his main passion in life. After graduating, Sherman came to Frederick and opened his cardiology practice in 1978. He was the first cardiologist in Frederick, practicing for 30 years before having to retire due to bad health. He was very active with the ACLS program in the beginning here in Frederick County. He worked with the hospital and ambulance staff to help develop classes for ACLS procedures. He taught many classes to nurses at FMH, not only in conjunction with ACLS, but classes for the education of the staff in cardiac arrhythmias. Sherman was an avid bridge player, becoming a life master. He loved to study the game and talk about bridge with anyone. He played poker with lots of buddies for years, and he loved play pool on Sundays with one of his best friends, Dr. Andrew Donelson. Dr. Kahan is survived by his loving wife, Katie, and their combined six children, Elizabeth Holtz and husband, Dan, Jacob Kahan and fiancé, Stephanie Gardner, David Kahan and fiancé, Ashley Parsons, Laura Thompson and boyfriend, Matt Desetti, Seth Kahan and girlfriend, Courtney Bomberger, and Samuel Kahan. He also leaves behind his cousin, Barry Ominsky; sister, Naoma Stern and husband, Irving; sister-in-law, Betsy Kahan and cousin, David Tamir. He also leaves special friends, Dr. Andrew Donelson, Dr. Jim Grissom, Charlie Zuravin, Steve Cohen, Arlene Gordon, Jeff and Vivian Riley, Robin and Jeff Sidel, Barb Kaetzel, JoAnne Airing, Helen Cowen, Sal and Myra Miller. He was preceded in death by his brother, Dr. Edwin Louis Kahan on July 26, 2012. Friends may call at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick, on Thursday, December 26 from 6 to 9pm. Funeral services will be held at 10:00am on Friday, December 27 from Beth Sholom Community Center, 1011 North Market Street, Frederick. Interment will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens.
