Darryl Stup

July 22, 1943 — April 25, 2014

Darryl Leslie Stup, a lifelong resident of Frederick, died April 25, 2014, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Judy Roberts Stup, whom he married on May 2, 1970; and he was the father of two daughters, Janna Marie Roberts Stup Barrick and Sarah Ann Kemp Stup. The son of George Josiah and Laura Helen Day Stup, he was born July 22, 1943, the third child of five, second son, all born at FMH. Darryl graduated from Frederick High School, attended Frederick Community College, and graduated from Shepherd University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard, serving from 1963 to 1967. He was employed by the State of Maryland at the Frederick County Courthouse for 23 years and by the Department of the Army, Fort Detrick, MWR, for 13 ½ years. Darryl was Master Councillor of the Frederick County Chapter, Order of DeMolay, and a member of FHS Class of 1961 Reunion Committee. He was active in PTSA at Parkway Elementary and Rock Creek School's Advisory Board, BOE Comprehensive Planning Committee, Autism National Committee, Frederick County Chapter of the Autism Society of America, and The Arc of Frederick County. A devoted family man, Darryl enjoyed being with his wife and daughters, attending family gatherings, and going to the beach with his family. He was very proud of the accomplishments of his children. He passes on a unique sense of humor, a thirst for knowledge, a love of libraries and cemeteries, and enjoyment of rock and roll. He was tender-hearted, friendly, and kind, yet he could be direct, even blunt, on occasion. An amateur genealogist, he assisted many families with their research. He began researching his family roots as a teenager. Darryl was descended from a long line of Frederick County families: Stup, Zimmerman, Angleberger, Renn, Ramsburg, Beard, House, Kemp, Young, Hughes, Dutrow, and Ridgley on the paternal side, and maternal families Day, Purdum, Davis, Baker, Brandenburg, Williams, Burdette, Lewis, Kindley, Miles, King, Burton, Clagett, Rine, Hyatt, Browning, Mark, and Windsor. Besides his wife Judy, he is survived by daughters Janna Marie Roberts Stup, her husband Robert Fagan Barrick, and Sarah Ann Kemp Stup; new grandson Isaac Robert Barrick; brothers George Larry Stup and wife Judy McIntyre Stup, Stephen Jay Stup and wife Jeannette Davis Stup, a sister, Linda Jeanne Broadrup and husband Dr. Robert Easterday Broadrup; maternal aunt Betty Carolyn Davis Jeffers and husband Mark Pulliam Jeffers, Jr., and their daughters Leslie Jeffers and Teresa Jeffers; nieces and nephews Lauren Davis Koogle and husband Gareth Koogle, Joel Lynn Stup, Elizabeth Broadrup Lieberman and husband Dr. James Lieberman, Robert Livingston Broadrup, Ph.D., and wife Lisa Larkin Broadrup, Garrett Cade Broadrup, Esq., and wife Dr. Jennifer Huang, Jessica Day Porter and husband Bryant Porter, Eric Jamison Stitely and wife Lila Johnson Stitely, Corey Stephen Stup, Stacy Davis, Heidi Davis, Wendy Deel, Jada, Abby, and Stephanie Stup; numerous grandnieces and nephews and cousins; and in-laws Nellie E. Roberts, Shirley Roberts Zimmerman and husband Kenneth Zimmerman, Kevin L. Zimmerman, Laurie Zimmerman Savage and husband Kevin, Catherine and James Savage. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister Alison Elizabeth Stitely on August 1, 2005. An active and devoted member of Mt. Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Darryl served numerous terms on the Church Council and Parish Joint Council and was Secretary-Treasurer of the Mt. Zion Cemetery. In accordance with Darryl's wishes, the day following his death he was laid to rest beside his parents at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Frederick, with close family members present in A Celebration of Life and Resurrection led by his Pastor Kenneth Gill. At sundown, H. Millard Haines, a friend since grade school, offered "Taps." All are welcome to attend a Memorial Service Saturday, May 17, 2014, at 11:00 a.m., at Mt. Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, corner of Mt. Phillip and Mt. Zion Roads. Donations may be made to the Mt.
