Charles Carrington Proffitt

Mr. Charles Carrington Proffitt, 71, formerly of Wilmington, NC, died at his home in Frederick, MD on March 30.  Born on January 31, 1945, he was the son of the late Carrington Albert (Al) and Dr. Gail Arlene (McClure) Proffitt.

Charlie was raised in Ames, Iowa and graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in Political Science. He always enjoyed working on cars with his friends, and was proud to work for Lotus Racing in the 1970's.  He moved to Wilmington, NC in the early 1980's, where he lived until he was assaulted, in his home, on December 28, 2014. The assault resulted in a traumatic brain injury and he spent more than a year recovering. He was always independent and was happy when he recently moved to his own place in Frederick, although he wanted to be back in NC or Iowa. Charlie was intelligent and well-read, with a "dry, Midwestern" sense of humor. He will be missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his daughter, Nancy Proffitt and husband Russ Glass of Myersville, MD, sister Ann Proffitt of Durham, NC, nephew Ryan Orning and wife Courtney of Raleigh, NC, and his niece Dr. Jennifer Orning and fiance Sean Griswold of Chicago, IL.

All services will be private at the convenience of the family. Any donations can be made to a charity of choice in his name.
