Timothy M. Barnes of Frederick passed away on December 15, 2024 at Edenton Retirement Community after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. He was born on March 15, 1943 in Cumberland to the late Merrill R. and Reba “Betty” Barnes.
Tim is survived by his sister, Judy Linn and husband William of Rockport, MA; his four sons: Michael (wife Karen), Christopher (wife Jody), Patrick (wife Samantha), and Matthew (wife Christina), all from Frederick. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Michael, Nicholas, Dylan, Henry, June and Tommy.
Tim was a 1961 graduate of Allegany High School in Cumberland, where he was heavily involved in extracurricular activities including being elected Class President. He was most proud of being a member of the 1959 football team that was the first in fourteen years to defeat Fort Hill in the Turkey Day Game. After high school, Tim attended Gettysburg College, where he studied biology and graduated in 1965.
In his professional life, Tim followed in his father’s footsteps and became a jeweler. He owned Barnes Jewelry stores in Frederick and Hagerstown and took over the family business in Cumberland. He won several awards over the years including being named one of the top jewelry designers in the US for 1974. In retirement, he continued working with his hands by renovating houses, which was a real labor of love for him.
Tim enjoyed many hobbies. He enjoyed skiing, cooking, traveling, playing cards, and doing crossword puzzles. However, he was most passionate about sports. He coached his sons in youth football and baseball. He was the voice of the Urbana Hawks Football Team as their PA man during much of the run to four straight state championships. He was a longtime fan of the Washington Redskins, the Baltimore Orioles, and whichever college football team his son, Matt, was coaching that season. He was a founding member of Holly Hills Country Club, where he played in regular golf and card games for over forty years. He was a role model to his four boys, teaching each how to be a gentleman. Perhaps his most memorable trait was his sense of humor which remained intact even in the worst days of the disease. He was always ready for witty banter, one liners, and old sayings.
He will be missed.
To honor Tim, there will be a gathering of friends from 2pm-4pm on Sunday, January, 19th at Holly Hills Country Club.
