Stanley T. Sundergill

November 27, 1927 — October 7, 2022

Stanley Theodore Sundergill, 94, of Frederick, MD passed away peacefully on October 7, 2022 surrounded by his family. He was the beloved and devoted husband of Sienna “Ann” Chassagne Sundergill for 69 years, married October 18, 1952. He and his loved ones were looking forward to celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary, as well as his 95th birthday.

Born November 27, 1927, to the late Theodore and Emma Sappington Sundergill, he lived most of his life in Frederick, except when in business school and the military.

Stan joined the US Marine Corps in 1945 during WWII. He trained at Parris Island and was stationed in Japan, China, and Camp Del Mar near San Diego. During his service, he was trained as a bookkeeper and managed PXs until 1948 when he received an Honorable Discharge.

Returning to civilian life, Stan ventured to Baltimore to pursue a degree in accounting. While staying at the Baltimore YMCA, he attended a dance class and met Ann, the love of his life, a story he loved to tell! They had a wonderful life together, dedicated to raising a family and keeping close ties with family and friends. Together they enjoyed dancing, attending plays and concerts, traveling the US, birdwatching, listening to country and big band music, and collecting antiques - with Frederick postcards his specialty. Stan also loved to watch sports, tend to his vegetable garden, find treasures with his metal detector, and fish with his buddies and family. His favorite pastime, however, was making people laugh! He was constantly joking with everyone he met, which he did until his last days.

To provide for his wife and family, Stan worked and studied long hard hours to build his career, working full-time while attending night school. Schools he attended include: Baltimore College of Commerce, Strayer College, University of Maryland, and Frederick Community College. For 30 years, he was an accountant in the Office of the Comptroller based at Fort Detrick, and visited other government facilities to advise and direct their accounting operations. Stan was promoted to Chief of the Accounting Branch and upon his retirement in 1982, he received the highest award given to civilian employees, the Commander’s Award for Civilian Service. In addition to full-time work, he was the accountant for Dewey Jordan, Inc and a number of Frederick County organizations: Literacy Council, League of Women Voters, and NARFE to name a few. For a while, he was bookkeeper for a dozen organizations at one time! Once retired, Stan embraced his interest in antiques through the joint establishment of S&S Antiques and Grandma’s Attic.

Stan was known and loved by many Fredericktonians over his almost 95 years. He was a member of: St John Catholic Church, where he was an usher and counted collection money, Knights of Columbus, American Legion, NARFE, AARP, and the Catoctin Coin Club that he co-founded and led. He also coached the Clover Hill Little League Baseball team.

His family was the most important thing in the world to him, as he often stated. In addition to his wife, he is survived by children & spouses: Ronald & Helen Sundergill, Karen & Andrew Carignan, JoyceAnn & Denman Schmid, and Gary & Tina Sundergill; grandchildren: Natalie Demoss, Matthew Carignan, Benjamin Carignan, Sienna Schmid, Ashley Hetrick, Taylor Sundergill, Desiree & Richard (spouse) Strunk, and Matthew South; great-grandchildren: Aidan, Brantley, Bryson, Jeremy, Brianna, Porsha, and Alyssa; nephews/nieces & spouses: Deborah Shaff, Christopher & Marsha Gamble, Judith & John Thurman, Charlene Peterson, David Holland, Donna & Timothy Murphy, Bruce Holland, Theresa & Brian Reed, and Louis & Linda Holland; cousins & spouses: James & Linda Sundergill and John & Barbara Sundergill.

In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his dear sister, Mary Gamble, and his cherished infant son, Baby Wayne.

The family sends thanks to all who have assisted in his care, especially recently: relatives, friends, neighbors, and the staff of: Visiting Angels, Assisting Hands, Thrive USA, Frederick County Senior Services Meals on Wheels, Johns Hopkins Community Physicians, BridgingLife Hospice, Frederick Health’s Home Care, Supportive and Geriatric Care, and Chronic Care Management programs.

Family and friends may gather at the Keeney & Basford Funeral Home at 106 East Church Street, Frederick, MD 21701 on October 13, 2022 at 4pm-7pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on October 14, 2022 at 11am at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 118 East 2nd St, Frederick, MD 21701. A Military Honors burial service will follow at Resthaven Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers and because Stan adored children of all ages, he requested that donations be made to a children’s charity of one’s choice, for example, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Save the Children.
