Sienna “Ann” Chassagne Sundergill, 98, of Frederick, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Jan. 23, 2025. She was the beloved and devoted wife of the late Stanley Theodore Sundergill for 69 years. Ann was born in Baltimore on Aug. 29, 1926, to the late Fernand C. and Bertha Frances Chassagne. However, due to her mother’s early death, she was lovingly “adopted” and raised by Charles E. & Mary Ann Grauer.
Ann earned a 2-year certificate at the Baltimore Business College and worked from 1942 until 1952 as a “star” secretary at the Baltimore Lumber Co., the M. Klieman & Co., and the Standard Store Equipment Co. As a young woman, Ann was also employed as a photo-shoot model for a Baltimore clothing company. She was a beauty!
Ann met Stan during a dance class in Baltimore. Stan loved to tell the story of how Ann was such a great dancer that the teacher always chose Ann as his partner to demonstrate steps. Stan finally got his chance to dance with Ann and “win her over”. After their marriage, they moved to Frederick. They had a wonderful life together, dedicated to raising a family while keeping strong ties with extended family and their many close friends.
Ann’s joyous life with Stan was a full one. They enjoyed dancing, attending plays and concerts, traveling the US, birdwatching, attending all of their children’s recitals and sports events, and listening to country, nostalgic, and big band music.
Ann’s family was the most important thing to her in the world. As a stay-at-home-mom, she lovingly cared for her four children, often single-handedly, while Stan worked full-time and attended night school. She was so good at juggling motherhood and homemaking that she co-hosted a homemakers radio series on WMHI. Later, after raising her family, she worked briefly at home, scheduling appointments for a carpet cleaning business. In addition, she and Stan developed a passion for antiques which became a hobby and livelihood for many years.
Her faith was always important to her. Upon moving to Frederick, she became a “life-long” member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. She was devoted to the parish through her active involvement and leadership in the Catholic Daughters of America. She was a humble model of unwavering faith, hope, and love.
Her hobbies included cooking, sewing, painting, making crafts, playing bridge, caring for the family cats, dogs, rabbits & parakeets, and shopping for fashionable clothing & jewelry. Antiquing opened up a love for Ann’s numerous collections including: glassware, paperweights, elephants, and dolls, to name just a few!
Ann’s warm and fun-loving personality endeared her to all who knew her. Many times she made up silly words and gestures to make those around her laugh. She never hesitated to offer a compliment or say a kind word. Even as her Alzheimer’s advanced, she was happy and she continued to laugh, sing and pray.
Her favorite pastime, recently, has been cheering others at Silverado through compliments, words of gratitude, spontaneous song, laughable antics and providing an endless supply of her favorite Hershey’s Chocolate Kisses to all!
In addition to her husband and parents, she is predeceased by numerous dear siblings and her cherished infant son, Baby Wayne. She is survived by children & spouses: Ronald & Helen Sundergill, Karen & Andrew Carignan, JoyceAnn & Denman Schmid, and Gary & Tina Sundergill; grandchildren: Natalie Demoss, Matthew Carignan, Benjamin Carignan, Sienna & David (spouse) Nessenson, Ashley Hetrick, Taylor & Mitchell (spouse) Gaylor, Desiree & Richard (spouse) Strunk, and Matthew & Blaine (spouse) South; great-grandchildren: Aidan, Brantley, Bryson, Jeremy, Brianna, Porsha, Alyssa, and Edmund “Teddy”; nephews/nieces & spouses: Deborah Shaff, Christopher & Marsha Gamble, Judith & John Thurman, Charlene Holland Peterson, David Holland, Donna & Timothy Murphy, Bruce Holland, Theresa & Brian Reed, Louis & Linda Holland, Verna & Bob White, Tracey & Patrick Brown, Sandy Gittings; cousins & spouses: James & Linda Sundergill and John & Barbara Sundergill.
The family sends special thanks to all who have assisted in her recent care, especially relatives, friends, the entire devoted staff at Silverado Frederick Memory Care, Kelly Llewellyn at Frederick Health, and Frederick Health Hospice.
