Shauna Heather Main, of Frederick, Maryland, passed away on March 23, 2023 at Collingswood Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Rockville, MD at the age of 68.
She was born May 7, 1954, in Frederick, MD, to Rebecca Fay (Duvall) and Paul Edward Main, and is survived by her brother Todd. Shauna was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, Bessie (Burdette) and Roy Edward Duvall, and William H. and Flora (Carpenter) Main, and her beloved kitties.
Shauna was educated in Frederick, graduating with honors from Frederick High in 1972. She held leadership positions in various clubs while working on the yearbook committee and playing in the FHS concert and marching bands. Following her parents example of serving the community, Shauna was afforded the privilege of being presented by her father as a Snow Belle at the Snow Ball and as a Mardi Gras Princess at the Mardi Gras Ball, both events being fundraisers for Frederick Memorial Hospital and sponsored by the Hospital Auxiliary and Frederick Women’s Civic Club, respectively. Shauna used her talents as a soloist in her church choir, was active in church youth groups, and was the life of many memorable parties in high school and college, entertaining with her piano and guitar playing skills.
Winning multiple scholarships, Shauna acquired a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Social and Behavioral Sciences from Johns Hopkins University (JHU), Baltimore, Maryland, a Master’s Degree in Clinical Social Work from the University of Maryland, and studied towards a Doctor of Science (ScD) Degree in Mental Hygiene from JHU’s School of Hygiene and Public Health.
She was a very gifted student and pursued excellence wherever she studied and worked. This included multiple positions throughout her 40 plus year career as a clinical social worker, psychotherapist and supervisor. Her final employer of 12 years was the Baltimore City Department of Social Services, holding multiple positions and finishing her career as the Adult Services Program Supervisor. Shauna reluctantly retired effective February 1, 2023 due to failing health. She was appreciative of her co-workers send off and thoughtfulness in staying in touch.
Shauna always looked forward to traveling, sightseeing and documenting the trips with photos. The last trip she enjoyed was to the west coast, where she adeptly managed her disabilities with the assistance of creative and committed college mates. She celebrated with college friends in March, 2022 at the 45-plus-1year JHU reunion. Her final outing was the 50 year Frederick High School Reunion this past October. Shauna was able, with great determination and much valued support from the reunion committee friends, to attend all the festivities. Since then her health rapidly declined as a result of diabetes and years of dialysis.
Above all, Shauna brought a quick smile, laughter, and a keen sense of humor and dry wit to all her encounters. Never one to leave a token behind, Shauna remained nostalgic and committed to retaining mementos and reliving adventures through her vivid storytelling. Shauna cherished her friendships and also was extremely grateful to her church friends and Frederick community members who volunteered their time and treasure to assisting her during her time of need, remembering her with special poems and words of encouragement.
The family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 4, at Calvary United Methodist Church, 131 West Second Street, Frederick, MD. The service will begin at 11 a.m., followed by interment at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
