Robert Earl “Digger” Dailey, Jr., 90, of Frederick, MD, passed away at his home on Monday June 10, 2024. Born in Washington, D.C. on September 11, 1933, to the late Robert E., Sr., and Margaret E. (Gates) Dailey. He was the beloved husband to the late Harriet Pauline (Ross) Dailey.
Bob was an accomplished athlete playing Varsity Football at McKinley Tech High School in DC, then Varsity track and Baseball at Frederick High School, all in the same school year.
Bob joined the U.S. Army and he was stationed at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center where he would meet his future wife, Harriet. He would obtain his mortician’s license in 1957 and begin working with his father at the family business. Together they would operate Robert E. Dailey and Sons Funeral Home, P.A., in Frederick and Thurmont. Bob retired in 2012 after serving numerous families in the Frederick County area for over 55 years
Bob was the 32nd degree Master Mason and Past Worshipful Master of the Frederick lodge. He was also a member of Tall Cedars of Lebanon, the Masonic Knights Templar, the Grand Chapter of the Eastern Star, Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters of Maryland, the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, and the Shriners International. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Mount Olivet Cemetery. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Frederick. He was a member of the Frederick County Football Officials Association and past president of the Frederick Babe Ruth League in the late 70s . Bob also enjoyed family vacations to Myrtle Beach.
He is survived by, his sons and wives, Robert E., III., & Patty L. Dailey, Douglas A. & Valerie A. Dailey, G. Scott Dailey & Debbie A. Willey, Stuart Ross Dailey, his grandchildren, Garrett Hunter Dailey, Ashley Danielle Dailey, Victoria & Cara Dudiak, Sarah Elizabeth & Josh Bock, Robert Earl “Robbie” Dailey IV, Alison Dailey & fiancée Brad Hanson, and 3 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his cousins Brigadier General John Garrison USAF of Ashburn, VA and Dorothy Lee Simpson of Martinsburg, West Virginia. Also many nephews and nieces in the Ross family.
In addition to his parents and wife, Robert is predeceased by his cousins Robert & Mary Barr and Earl M. “Pee Wee” Simpson.
Family and friends can gather at Keeney and Basford Funeral Homes, P.A., 106 East Church Street, Frederick, MD 21701, on Sunday June 16, 2024 from 2pm – 5pm. A Masonic ceremony will be held at the Funeral Home on Sunday. Military honors will be performed at the grave side.
A funeral will be held at the funeral home on Monday June 17, 2024 at 11am. Interment will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick.
