Robert (Bob) Eugene Brandt, 84, passed away peacefully at his home in Palm Harbor, Florida, on October 16, 2019, surrounded by his family.
Bob was born in Walkersville, Maryland, on July 29, 1935, to Milton Lawrence and Evelyn Hartsock Brandt (both deceased). He had one brother, William Charles Brandt, and one sister, Geraldine Jones (both deceased). He graduated from Walkersville High School in 1954.
On October 29, 1954, Robert married Shirley Eichelberger. They were together for 60 years, until Shirley’s death in 2014.
Bob worked for Acme Market from 1955 until 1962, when he began working for Safeway. In 1996, he retired from Safeway as a 1st Cutter in the Meat Department. He was a member of the Meat Cutters Union, local 27 (UFCW). Bob served in the 29th Division of the Maryland National Guard from 1951 until July 1962 and was a member of the Sons of the American Legion and the Order of the Elks.
Before moving to Florida, Bob was a volunteer at Frederick Memorial Hospital, where he dedicated over 7,000 hours of volunteer service. He had a warm smile and friendly greeting as he transported discharged patients and ran innumerable errands for the hospital. Bob’s volunteer work for the hospital fulfilled a promise he made after he won a battle with cancer.
Bob loved woodworking and was often in his shop cutting, sanding, gluing, and building a variety of items for family and friends. He also loved playing Shanghai with his grandchildren and others.
Bob is survived by his and Shirley’s three children -- Steven Brandt and his husband Richard Boylan of St. Petersburg, Florida, Teresa Stitely of Middletown, Maryland, and Diane DiCroce of Palm Harbor, Florida, along with five grandchildren, Michael DiCroce and his wife Holly DiCroce, Molly DiCroce, Devin Stitely, Wyatt Stitely and Bailey Jo Stitely, a number of nieces and nephews, his childhood friends Bob and Gloria Handley, and many other dear friends from over the years.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 am-noon on Saturday, October 26, 2019, at the Keeney & Basford Funeral Home located at 106 E Church Street in Frederick. Services will follow at noon with Father Pothin Ngyele officiating. Interment will be at the Resthaven Memorial Gardens, at 9501 Catoctin Mountain Hwy in Frederick, followed by a social gathering in the community room at Resthaven.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made in Bob’s name to the Suncoast Hospice Foundation. Online condolences may be shared at www.keeneybasford.com.
