Mrs. Rebecca Ann Basford Nikirk Harbaugh, 84, of Frederick, died on Thursday, December 29, 2022, at the Kline Hospice House. Becky was the wife of the late Carl R. Harbaugh who died in June, 2016, and Dean W. Nikirk, who died in Dec., 1974.
Born in Frederick on July 21, 1938, Becky was the daughter of the late Raymond R. and Margaret Cramer Basford.
A 1956 graduate of Frederick High School, Becky soon found employment with the FBI in Washington, DC. She later began her career in banking, first with Farmers and Mechanics National Bank of Frederick, and later with the Frederick County National Bank, from where she retired as a Vice President in 1998.
She was a long-time member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Frederick, a member of the Homemakers Club of Walkersville/Mt. Pleasant, and was a volunteer with the Frederick Rescue Mission.
Always proud of her farm heritage; she was a lover of nature, flowers, and gardening. She was an avid reader, an antiques collector, and enjoyed working with ceramics. She loved to travel with her husband, Carl.
She is survived by two brothers, Richard C.C. Basford, and wife Sue, of Frederick, and George D. Basford, and wife, Susanne, of Urbana, nephews and nieces, Adam C. Basford, Laura Basford Stein, Andrew T. Basford, Joseph D. Basford, and Emily Basford Gebhart. Also surviving are a number of great nieces and nephews.
Becky is survived by step-daughters, Carla Ritenour and husband, Jim of Seminole Fla., and Carolyn Cable and Hal Waxter, of Frederick.
Also surviving are step-grandchildren, Jared, Samantha, Taylor, Amanda and Natalie.
In addition to her family, Becky treasured many old and new friendships.
The family will receive friends at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, on Wednesday, January 4, 2023 from 4PM to 7PM. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 5, 2023 at 11:30AM at the Evangelical Lutheran Church, 31 E. Church Street, Frederick. The Rev. Ann Dentry will officiate. Interment will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials made to the Evangelical Lutheran Church, 35 East Church St., Frederick, MD, 21701 or to the Frederick Rescue Mission, 419 W. South St., Frederick, MD. 21701.
The family wishes to extend a heartfelt "Thank You" to the staff at the Kline Hospice House, for their dedicated care and loving concern.
