Peggy Lou Githerman

Peggy Lou Githerman, 73, passed from this world on Sunday, February 12, 2023.  She was born June 21, 1949 in Baltimore, MD to her late parents, Bennie D. Githerman of Kentucky, and her beloved mother Helen Margaret Milyard Githerman of Frederick, MD.

Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her aunt, Betty McClellan, and her uncle, Robert P. Marendt. She is survived by her aunt, Mary Catherine Clark, and cousin Connie Clark of Campbellsville, KY. Peggy is also survived by numerous cousins and nieces and nephews of the Marendt and McClellan families, and her cousin through marriage Jane McClellan.

Very good friends who provided support during her illness are:  Shirley Baker, Wanda Stultz, Sandra Trout, Cheryl and Greg Novotny, Gaylon and Lavenia Cornell, Elinor Fisher, and her neighbors Kristi and Grant Kehler, and Carwell Harris.

Peggy was a 1967 graduate of Thomas Johnson High School in Frederick, MD.  She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hood College in 1971.  In 1986 she received a Masters Degree in Government and Human Sciences from Hood College.  Peggy worked as a Media Assistant at Frederick High School for 30 years before retiring in 2001.  She especially enjoyed seeing former students again when their own children were students.

AmeriCorps, a service organization, benefitted from Peggy’s volunteerism from 2001-2003. She enjoyed working under the leadership of Maret Sisas who was a great mentor and role model. In 2003 Peggy returned to Frederick County Public Schools as a substitute for several years.

Peggy attended The Evangelical Reformed United Church of Christ where she was a lifelong member.   The church family provided Peggy with friendship and encouragement for many years.

Funeral services will be held Monday, February 20, 2023 at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home.  Visitation will begin at 11AM, with a service at noon led by The Rev. Dr. Barbara Kershner Daniel.  Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Frederick, Maryland.

Memorial Contributions may  be made to “The Peggy Githerman Scholarship Fund” through the Community Foundation of Frederick County, 312 E. Church Street, Frederick, MD 21701.
