Mrs. Nellie Smith Simpson, longtime resident of Frederick, passed away on January 14, 2019 at Saint Joseph Ministries in Emmitsburg MD. She was the wife of the late Charles W. Simpson, Jr. Born on January 14, 1914 in Taneytown, MD, she was the daughter of the late Joseph & Nellie Smith.
Mrs. Simpson was a graduate of Taneytown High School. She completed her nurses training at Saint Joseph Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. After graduation, Nellie served in the United States Army from March 1941 to December 1945, and made 17 crossings of the Atlantic while serving as a Nurse aboard the U.S. Army Hospital Ship, Wisteria. Nellie earned a master's degree from the University of Maryland and completed studies in Public Health at the University of Pennsylvania. She dedicated her life to Public Health issues and retired as the Head Nurse of the Frederick County Health Department. In retirement, she enjoyed time with her friends, caring for her dogs and collecting antiques.
Mrs. Simpson is survived by her sister Helen Campbell and her nieces and nephews John Niemyer, Susan Steele, Jeffrey Niemyer, Susann J. Williams, Thomas Fred Smith and Charles Alan James. She is preceded in death by her siblings Elizabeth Jane Niemyer, Fred Smith and Josephine Coker.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered for family only on January 28, 2019 at 11am at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 44 Frederick St., Taneytown, MD 21787. Her interment will follow in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick, MD. Contributions may be made in Mrs. Simpson's name to either St. Joseph Catholic Church at the above address or to St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 112 E. 2nd St., Frederick, MD 21701.
