Nellie Redmond

October 5, 1929 — January 15, 2023

Mrs. Nellie C. (Summers) Redmond, 93, of Frederick, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 15, 2023 at Country Meadows Assisted Living. She was the loving wife of Chester Redmond for 75 years. They would have celebrated their 76th anniversary on February 15th.

Born October 5, 1929 in Walkersville, MD, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Madeline (Carmack) Summers.

Nellie graduated from Frederick High School in 1946. At various times in her career, she worked at the ACME and Safeway supermarkets, Fort Detrick and AOPA. She was a life-long member of Mt. Carmel UMC, and served the church in numerous positions including Youth Leader, Chairman of the Board, and Choir.

Nellie loved people and was always ready with a joke and a smile. Throughout her life, she enjoyed Bingo, bowling, canning home-grown garden vegetables and crocheting. Many first-prize ribbons at the Great Frederick Fair had Nellie's name on them. She and Chester enjoyed the beautiful view from their porch, which they called their “little slice of paradise.” Neighbors waved as they passed by and sometimes stopped to join them to sit and chat.

Nellie’s family was her world. She was the most loving mother who always delighted in having her children close by. Also an amazing cook, she would gather family at home on Sunday afternoons for a meal. We will cherish the memories made around the kitchen table.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children: Linda Jenkins and husband Denny of Jefferson, Mark Redmond and wife Debbie of Frederick, Trudy Roelke and husband Bob of Frederick, and Lori Cage and husband Pete of Damascus. She was blessed with the following grandchildren: Ryan Jenkins, Marcie (Jenkins) Kozlencer, Kristi Redmond, Andy Redmond, Wesley Redmond, Cliff Redmond, Rob Roelke, and Erin Roelke, as well as 13 great-grandchildren. She is survived by one sister, Helen Main of Maughansville, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her siblings: Edith Hamilton, Paul Summers and Walter Summers, Jr.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM on Tuesday, January 24, 2023 at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church Street, Frederick. The funeral service will begin there at 2:00 PM. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Nellie's name to the Mt. Carmel UMC designated to the Bells Fund, 9411 Baltimore Road, Frederick, MD 21704 or Kline Hospice House, 7000 Kimmel Road, Mt. Airy, MD 21771.
