Nancy Boyd Leidenfrost died on July 6, 2019 at Frederick, Maryland. Mrs. Leidenfrost was born March 18, 1933, in Jefferson County, West Virginia, daughter of Fannie C. and Holmes Ercel Boyd. She was educated in public schools in Jefferson County, and graduated from Shepherdstown High School in 1952. Mrs. Leidenfrost was a 1956 graduate of Shepherd College, with a bachelor's degree in home economics and earned a master's degree in 1967 from the University of Maryland.
Mrs. Leidenfrost had a long career beginning in 1956 as a home economist with the West Virginia University extension program in Raleigh County, West Virginia. In 1962, Nancy began employment with the University of Maryland extension program as a home economist. Her tenure at the U.S. Department of Agriculture began in 1969 when she was named the National Program Leader of the Expanded Food and Nutrition Program Extension Service. In 1990, Nancy was named National Program Leader of the Hunger and Undernutrition Extension Service and served in that capacity until her retirement in 1994.
Nancy married Charles B. Leidenfrost in 1971. They resided in Annapolis, Maryland until his death in 2002.
Mrs. Leidenfrost is survived by two nieces, Ann Watson Phillips and her husband, Richard A. Phillips of Berryville, VA; Elizabeth Watson Martin and her husband, Tom Royston of Winchester, VA; her brother-in-law, the Rev. Dr. Raleigh H. Watson, of Berryville, VA; three step-daughters, Agnes Leidenfrost O'Connell, Edina Leidenfrost Varsa, and Elizabeth Leidenfrost Porter; and four great nephews, Nicholas Phillips, Andrew Phillips, Raleigh Martin, and S. Stuart Martin. She was predeceased by her husband, her parents, her sisters, Patricia Boyd Watson (Mrs. Raleigh H.); Margie Boyd Adams; and a brother, Holmes Ercel Boyd, Jr.
Nancy was a member of Alpha Sigma Tau, the Pack Horse Ford Chapter of the West Virginia Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and numerous professional associations including Epsilon Sigma Phi, the American Home Economics Association, the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences, and the International Federation for Home Economics. She had been a member of Bradley Hills Presbyterian Church in Bethesda prior to moving to Frederick, Maryland. Nancy's hobbies and interests included reading, traveling, collecting antiques and entertaining.
A funeral service will be held at Keeney & Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick, MD, 21701, at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 13, 2019, with the Rev. Timothy L. Shatzer officiating. Friends will be received
beginning at 9:30 a.m.
