Matthew Jay “Redd” Wilms, age 57, of Thurmont, Maryland passed away unexpectedly on June 9th, 2023 at Medstar Hospital in Washington, DC. Matt was born on August 6th, 1965 in Lincoln, Nebraska to Heinz and Sue Ann (Mason) Wilms. On June 16th, 2012 he married Michelle and they shared an unconditional love. Matt enjoyed being with and was so proud of his children Logan, Kaily, and Evan and his wife Anna.
He grew up in Burtonsville, Maryland and graduated from Paint Branch High School, and then furthered his education at Frostburg State University where he graduated with his Bachelor’s of Science Degree. It was there that Matt became a Delta Phi Omega (DPO), establishing wonderful lifelong friendships. Matt will be remembered for his deep, booming voice, sarcastic humor, and immense up-to-something grin. He was an avid debater much to his friends’ and family’s shagrin. Matt loved the outdoors, nature, and animals; especially his sweet Polly. He loved relaxing at the beach (his happy place), driving his boat on the sound and fishing. Matt took pleasure in telling stories, making others laugh, and supporting his friends. He enjoyed farming at Chestnut Hill and was the previous owner of the Frederick Carriage Company and The Hop and Vine.
Matt is survived by his wife; children; mother; two sisters, Lisa (Mark) Renn and Ann (Daryl) Tyler; and his nieces and nephews; Monica (Robert) Bush, and their children Carlie and Levi; Sydney (Jack) Panther; Brady Tyler; Jordyn (Justin) Eckard; and Andrew Renn; as well as aunts, uncles, and cousins. He is also survived by his in-laws; Cecelia Ball; Mel (Paulette) Ball; Jennifer (Mike) O’Dell, and their sons, Brant and Cooper; and many friends. He was predeceased by his grandparents and father.
The family will receive friends from 4pm to 6pm, on Tuesday, June 27, 2023 at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church Street, Frederick. A celebration of life will immediately follow at 6pm.
