Mary H. Poland

Mary H. Smith Poland (95) went to be with the Lord on November 18, 2022. Born on June 10, 1927 she was the daughter of the late Clarence P. Handley Sr and Fannie M. Handley (Walters).

Growing up locally, Mary attended North Market Street School. While raising her family, she worked many years as a seamstress for local sewing factories. Later as a CNA, she provided loving care to elderly and did volunteer work for the Salvation Army. Mary loved to travel and welcomed all into her home. She was a member of Flint Hill UMC.

Known as "Aunt Mary" and the family Matriarch, she was the last of her immediate family. She was predeceased by 2 spouses, Charles M. Smith Jr and Henry H. Poland; 2 brothers (Earl Handley and Clarence P. "Bud" Handley); 1 sister (Ruth Luhn); 3 grandchildren (Alan Morris, Jennifer Burns and Melissa Geisbert); sons-in-law (Chester L. Morris Jr, Lloyd Ramey; daughter-in-law (Bonnie Smith), and 1 niece (Marie Yohn). Surviving are her five children, Veda Darlene Morris, Gene D. Smith Sr., Diane M. Burns, Mary Teresa Smith, and Patricia G. Knott (Brian). Also special nieces Faith Lucas and Sharon Burdette as well as a number of nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 10-12 on Wednesday, November 23, 2022 at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Homes, P.A., 106 East Church St, Frederick, MD where services will begin at noon. Officiating will be Pastor Rod Fry from Flint Hill UMC. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Frederick, Md with a graveside service. Serving as pallbearers will be Brian Knott, Robert Morris, Brian Knott Jr, Bradley Knott, Brett Knott and Gene D. (Doug) Smith Jr. In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Flint Hill Church at 2732 Park Mills Road, Adamstown, MD or Hospice.
