On Wednesday July 27’Th Mary Sherwood Linton 90 of Myrtle Beach SC was called home to the kingdom of Heaven.
A mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, she will be missed by many. Born in Dublin Ireland she was predeceased by her father William Sherwood at the age of 5. She finished school at the age of 14. She began working and often spoke of life in Ireland in those days. Being the child of a widowed woman who worked hard and proud to provide not only for her own children but to help other families nearby.
Predeceased by her mother Mary Kelly Sherwood, she often spoke of her deep love for her and how much she missed her.
Mary lived in Ireland until the age of 21. Predeceased by the love of her life Robert E Linton, they met in Ireland while he was in the service. She almost “stood him up” but then felt bad and went back after a couple of hours and went out for that first date. That date led to a move and life in the United States. Mary enjoyed her trips home to Ireland to visit loved ones and her home land. There was always a piece of her heart in Ireland.
50 years of marriage brought three children. Patricia Crook (Ashby) , Bruce Linton (Janet), and a daughter who predeceased her at the age of 15 Tina Linton. She often spoke of that tragic loss with great pain.
She is also predeceased by two brothers' “Billy” (Of Eire) and Georgie, of the UK.
She is also survived by siblings Jimmy (Sandra) Sherwood, Eileen Barry, Dess Sherwood. All of the UK and Nancy Georgiou of Ireland. She is survived by grandchildren, Doug and Stacy Linton, Desi (Shanna), Sean (Janice) Crook, Shannon Platt (James) along with many great grandchildren nieces and nephews.
Mary spent a lot of years working in the food industry in one form or another be it the school cafeteria, waitressing, opening the Little Europe restaurant to working at Sam's club handing out food samples in the demo department where she finally retired at the age of 80.
She loved to dance and loved Irish music. She always had a cup of hot English/Irish tea to offer. She always had an opinion and could be quite blunt. She had no clue how to operate electronic gadgets. She was often called “wrong way Mary”. If she should to go left, you can rest assured, she would go right. She did not know a stranger. She had an incredibly witty and quick response for everything and loved to be the center of attention. I am reminded by her sister how she could shop for long periods of time and then walk away without buying a thing! She enjoyed making people laugh. She was also human. She made mistakes in her life as we all do, but she loved and missed her family. She spoke to her family overseas often especially her sister and although they were parted in miles, they were close in heart. I think if she could change anything she would probably pick up the phone a little more just to say I love you to all her family.
She was laid to rest at Brook Hill Cemetery in Frederick Md.
Service officiated by Deacon Kim Hintzman. Funeral arrangements and transportation handled by Hardwick Funeral Home of Myrtle Beach and Keeney & Basford Funeral home of Frederick MD.
