Mary Hartwell Brown

Mary Angelica Hartwell (Bobbie) was born on April 18, 1925, to Ralf Lee Hartwell and Mary Davis Hartwell (nee Mary Cushman Davis). Her brothers were Ralf Lee Hartwell, Jr. and John Monsell Hartwell. She was baptized by her great uncle, The Rt. Rev. Frederick Bingham Howden, missionary Bishop of New Mexico. She was confirmed Easter Day, 1937, at the Church of St. Andrew, South Orange, NJ. She graduated from Miss Beard’s School in Orange, NJ in 1942. Mary attended Swarthmore College and graduated from New York University, School of Education in 1949. In the early 1950s, Mary taught elementary school in Wilton, CT, Venezuela, and Cleveland, OH. On November 28, 1953, Mary married Kenneth Avard Brown, at the Church of St. Andrew, South Orange, NJ. Mary was ordained to the permanent diaconate in 1989 at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Pittsburgh, PA. She served in churches in PA, TN, and MD. Recently, she assisted at chapel services at Buckingham’s Choice, the lifecare community she lived in. Mary enjoyed singing, needlework, studying the Episcopal Liturgy, and travel. She and her husband sang together in choirs. Mary is preceded in death by her husband and brothers. She is survived by three sons, Christopher Parker Brown, Peter Hartwell Brown (married Margaret Allin) and Timothy Avard Brown (married Nancy Robert), and two grandsons: Matthew and Travis.
