Mrs. Maria Idali "Iedje" Covell, 76, of Frederick, passed away on Monday, April 21, 2025 at Frederick Health. She was the loving wife of Thomas Covell for 55 years.
Born October 22, 1948 in Spaubeek, the Netherlands, she was the daughter of the late Pieter and Maria Buskens.
Iedje graduated from nursing school in Sittard, the Netherlands. After meeting the love of her life Tom, who was serving in the Air Force, they married and moved to Frederick where she started her 40-year nursing career at Frederick Memorial Hospital in the ICU. In addition to being a loving wife and devoted mother, she enjoyed spending time with friends and family, especially her grandchildren who call her “Oma.” She loved going back home to Holland, crocheting, watching reality TV and game shows, reading, playing slot machines, and dancing. Above all, Iedje devoted her life to helping others: her family, her neighbors, her community. She would take temperatures, fold laundry, prepare meals - whatever was necessary to lend a hand. She touched many lives with her generosity and passion for life leaving behind a legacy of joy and love. However, to her family, Iedje was known for her down to earth perspective on life, kind heart, stylish fashion, sense of humor, and always unending love. She will be dearly missed.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughters Claudia "Mientje" Covell (Chris Hocker) and Michelle Yaung (J.T.); grandchildren Jasper Hocker, Claire Hocker, Kai Yaung, and Mei Yaung; siblings Huub, Math, Maria, Wil, José, and Mien; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She will be remembered by her cherished friend Marge Hargett, her sister-in-law Jean Rhinehart (Ed), and her brother-in-law Jack Covell.
She was preceded in death by siblings Vic, Jean, Ger, and Jos; her childhood nanny and husband, Tante Lena and Ome Henk; as well as her sister-in-law Donna Covell.
The family will receive friends from 1pm to 4pm, on Sunday, April 27, 2025 at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church Street, Frederick. The funeral service will be held at 11am, on Monday, April 28, 2025 at the funeral home. The family will receive friends from 10am to 11am. Inurnment will be private.
