John Wayne Thompson

July 29, 1956 — June 8, 2024

Mr. John Wayne Thompson, of Severn, MD, died peacefully on June 8, 2024, surrounded by his family at his sister’s home in Boonsboro, MD.

Born July 29, 1956 in Rockville, MD.  He was the son of Jacqueline Ruth Bitting Thompson Bates and husband James F. Bates and the late Maurice Wayne Thompson.

John graduated from Rockville High School (1974) and served two years in the United States Army. John always possessed a strong work ethic.  After marrying the love his life, Sherree, John was an independent driver and owned his own trucking business, “John Thompson and Son”.  Several years later, John drove for U.S. Food Services until his retirement.

As his grandfather and father before him, John was a master of multiple dialects and could improvise a comedy routine on any subject upon request.  He loved motorcycles, cars, trucks, especially his Dodge Ram 2500.  John was an avid golfer, fisherman and sports fan of the Minnesota Vikings and the Boston Red Sox.

In addition to his ex-wife, Sherree, John is survived by his son; John Wayne Thompson, Jr., his sisters Kathy Thompson Miller (Mark), Traci Drew Vaughn (Brendan) and brother James D. Bates.  Uncles, Gary Thompson (Ginny), Ronnie Thompson, Mark Thompson (Donna), Greg Bitting, Lee Bitting (Linda).  Nephews, Garrett Miller; Kyle Miller (Kim), his great niece, Kynlee Grace Miller and step-mother, Alice Thompson.   John leaves behind several cousins and his dear friend and fishing buddy, Gregory Bivins.  John also leaves behind his many friends and the gang at Perry’s Restaurant, Odenton, MD, and the staff at Watson’s Restaurant, Jefferson, MD.  To know John was to love him.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by; paternal grandparents, Maurice Edward Thompson and Marie Anne Heffner Thompson; maternal grandparents, Cecil Edward Bitting and Ruth Cornell Bitting; sister, Karen Thompson; cousin, Troy Thompson, and aunt, Becky Thompson.

A private memorial will be held at a later date.  Online condolences may be shared at www.keeneybasford.com.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in John Thompson’s name to a local animal shelter as he loved all animals.   The family would like to thank Pastor Jeff Summers, Harvest Life Ministries, Middletown, MD and Frederick Health Hospice, Frederick, MD.

Memories, Laughter and most of all LOVE … the treasures we shall keep forever of our much-loved John.  Keep smiling down on us … until we meet again.
