John L. “Skip” Manley, 84, of Frederick, died on Friday, July 12, 2024 at Frederick Health Hospital. He was married to Carol A. Manley in August of 1965. Born in Frostburg, Maryland, on November 18, 1939. He was the son of the late John F. Manley and Mary P. Manley of Frostburg.
Surviving are his three children, John F. Manley and wife Betsy of Frederick, Mary Jarvis and husband Darren of Adamstown, and daughter, Anne Manley of Cleveland, Ohio, sister, Maureen Spearman and husband Barney of Dayton, Ohio, three grandchildren, Maggie Manley, Rachel Jarvis and Pasha Manley and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his good friend and companion, Janey Boyer.
He was proceeded in death by his wife, Carol and grandson, Nicholas Jarvis.
Skip attended Potomac State as an ROTC in 1960. He earned his undergraduate degree from Fairmount State in 1962. While at Fairmount State he played Varsity soccer for two years. He served active duty in the Navy from 1962-1964 on the USS Mansfield DD-728. After his military service, he earned his Masters in Counseling at the American University. He was the first ordained deacon at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church by Bishop Francis Murphy on June 19, 1976. Skip taught religious education RCIA and Pre-Cana classes for many years. He was an advocate for the Tribunal for 23 years and a Chaplain at the Hagerstown Prisons for multiple years.
Skip was the Mission Coordinator at St. Ignatius in Urbana, MD from 1985-1986.
He worked in the Judicial System as area director for juvenile services and adult probation. He retired from the State of Maryland in 1995 and started a program with the Sheriff’s Office and district court for alternative sentencing.
In his free time, he enjoyed teaching obedience classes for dogs at the Catoctin Kennel Club as well as for Breakaway Action Dogs.
The family will receive friends from 3pm to 7pm, on Thursday, July 18, 2024 at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church Street, Frederick. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00AM, on Friday, July 19, 2024 at St. John's Catholic Church, 118 E. 2nd Street, Frederick. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Community Foundations of Frederick County in C/O the Nicholas B. Jarvis fund 312 E.
