Joan Virginia Hankey

Mrs. Joan Virginia Hankey passed from this life on July 12, 2023, at the age of 92. She was born in Baltimore, Maryland on October 14, 1930. She was the daughter of Dr. William and Treva Ross of Frederick. She was the wife of the late Richard H. Hankey, her high school sweetheart, and love of her life for over 50 years.

Mrs. Hankey was a graduate of Hood College. She was an accomplished artist and specialized in watercolors. She possessed a great sense of style in all she did. Joan took great joy in walking all over Frederick with her Australian shepherd engaging in conversation with people she would meet.

Joan was a devoted mother to her three children, Laurel L. Mitchell of Frederick, Richard T. Hankey of Braddock Heights and Robert R. Hankey of Thurmont. Joan had six grandchildren; Brent Mitchell, Katie Slagle, Josh Hankey, Justin Hankey, Kaitlin Hankey and Gabriel Hankey. Additionally, Joan had ten great grandchildren. Joan will also be remembered by her lifelong friend Gloria Gafney.

Family and friends can gather at Keeney and Basford Funeral Homes, PA, 106 East Church St. Frederick, MD 21701, on Monday July 24, 2023 from 12pm until the start of the funeral at 1pm. Interment will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery.
