James T Coffey

March 22, 1943 — October 6, 2023

It is with deep sadness we announce Jim's death on October 6, 2023. Jim faced many health problems over the years with courage and humor.

He was born outside of Kings Mountain, North Carolina on March 22, 1943, the second son of the late James Donald and Edna Louise Breakfield Coffey. He was the beloved husband and best friend of his wife, Barbara, for over 59 years. Together, Jim and Barbara have three children and eight grandchildren. Their son, James Thomas (Tommy) Coffey, Jr. and his wife, Patricia Stahler Coffey have two sons, James William Coffey and Gregory Quinn Coffey, and a daughter, Audrey Paige Coffey. Daughter, Amy Elizabeth Coffey Bravo and husband Noé Gomez Bravo have a daughter, Reina Elizabeth Bravo (of Littleton, Colorado) and two sons, Antonio Noé Bravo and Noah James Bravo. Daughter Rebecca Louise Ireland has one daughter, Madeline Grace Ireland and a son, Daniel Frederick Ireland. Each one of his family was the object of love and pride for Jim and he was interested in and cared about everything going on in their lives. Jim also leaves behind his sister and brother-in-law, Richard and Bonnie VanAtta, and sister-in-law, Margaret Main, and three special cousins, Lisa Sisk of Farmington, New Hampshire, Priscilla Hayes of Gastonia, North Carolina and Barbara Fells of Kings Mountain, North Carolina. He will be remembered by his friends David Law, Jerry Coulter, Hoodie Geisbert and Donnie Tregoning. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his brother, Bobby Eugene Coffey, his in-laws, Harry and Madeline Main, his brother-in-law, Harry F. Main Jr., and his sweet granddaughter, Margaret Elizabeth "Liz" Coffey.

Jim held many jobs over his lifetime beginning at age fifteen. His favorite one was frying steak at the, then, Peter Pan Inn. He worked at Montgomery College as a gardener for thirty-three and one half years and retired from there. Jim was active in his lifetime in many activities. He, along with his friend Roger Myers, coached the baseball team when Tommy was playing. Jim also loved fishing on the Chesapeake Bay, going to movies, and watching the Orioles and Ravens play. For many years, he was a member of the Urbana Fire Department and helped at the carnival in the coke stand or the funnel cake stand. He was a long time member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Urbana. He had at one time been in the choir. He had also acted as a greeter or usher. For many years, he played a shepherd in Wesley Chapel's live nativity. Jim never met a stranger and always had a little story or joke to tell. The kids at church often looked forward to the candy and little toys he brought.

The family would like to thank all of his wonderful doctors: Dr. DelGrippo, Dr. Rengen, Dr. Marina, Dr. Smith, Ali Hazrati, Dr. Williams and all of the excellent nurses and staff at Frederick Health Hospital on the fourth-floor heart unit. Also, many thanks to the home healthcare nurses, especially Angela Combo and Lana Voynik.

The family will receive visitors at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Homes, P.A., 106 E. Church Street, Frederick, MD, on Wednesday, October 11, 2023 from 4 - 7 PM. The funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, October 12, 2023 at 11 AM, with Reverend David Hodsdon presiding. Interment will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
