James Hoke Bowers Jr. of Frederick, avid golfer, generous father, and most proud of his half-century marriage to “the prettiest girl in Frederick,” died Thursday, Aug. 22, 2019, of complications from Alzheimer’s disease at Somerford House Frederick. He was 91.
He was the husband of the late Rebecca Elkins Bowers. Born in Baltimore on Jan. 28, 1928, he was the son of the late James Hoke Sr., and Hattie Griffin Bowers.
James served his country post-World War II in the United States Marine Corps. He worked for many years as a production manager for the American Optical Company in Frederick. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, the Francis Scott Key American Legion Post #11, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Catoctin Club of Frederick. He played countless rounds of golf on the VFW course.
Survivors include his sons, Matthew G. Bowers of Baltimore, Andrew S. Bowers and wife Vicki of Eldersburg, and Stephen C. Bowers and wife Kristin of Carlisle, Pennsylvania; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Ellen Zimmerman.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, 2019, at Saint John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 118 E. 2nd St., Frederick. Interment will follow in St. John’s Cemetery, E. 3rd Street, Frederick.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, the BrightFocus Foundation, or the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.
