Harley Eugene "Gene" Young

Mr. Harley Eugene “Gene” Young, 85, of Thurmont, MD, passed away peacefully on Christmas morning, December 25, 2024. Born September 19, 1939, in Frederick, he was the son of the late Austin Ulysses Young Jr., and Geraldine Natoma Kemp Young, both of Frederick county.

Mr. Young was the owner of Young Electric Service in Frederick for many years and later went on to establish a small archery shop in Myersville, and a business in Nashville Tennessee.

In his younger years, he took great pleasure in deep-sea fishing and boating, as well as deep-sea diving in Florida and was a member of the Gold Coast Aquanauts.

Gene was an individual of exceptional kindness and generosity, and a force of nature. He was blessed with many good friends throughout his life.

He enjoyed various activities, including traveling, golfing, camping, archery, boating, fishing, and photography. He loved the outdoors and had a profound appreciation for nature. He went on numerous fishing trips with close friends to Canada, creating a lifetime of treasured memories.

Living on his daughter and son-in-law‘s family farm, he found joy riding his golf cart down to the river. Gene cherished spending time with his family, particularly his grandson, and enjoyed listening to music by Charlie Pride, Hank Williams, Sr., Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, George Jones, and Patsy Cline with his good friend Dave Becker while reminiscing about the good old days of growing up in Frederick.

Mr. Young was a member of the AMVETS Post 2, Frederick, Elks Lodge #684, Frederick, American Legion Post 282, Woodsboro, and a lifetime member of the Big Oak Lodge, Middletown, MD.

He is survived by his daughter, Tina R. Young - Shanholtzer (husband, Kelly T. Shanholtzer ), of Thurmont, MD; grandson, Justin T. Shanholtzer, of Thurmont, MD; sister, Natoma I. Young Baker (husband, Larry Baker) of WA; and two nieces, Stephanie Jones, of WV and Dana Ludwig (husband, Duane) of PA; and many loving friends. Gene was predeceased by his late wife Mrs. Ruth E. “Sara” McCrossin Young and younger brother, Dennis Wayne Young.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Keeney and Basford Funeral Homes, P.A., 106 E. Church Street, Frederick, MD. Funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, January 8, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. Interment will immediately follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick.

Pallbearers for the service will include Kelly Shanholtzer, Justin Shanholtzer, Travis Furr, Larry Wachter, Bill Delawter, and Vernon Summers.
