William Eugene Burdette (Gene), 90, peacefully passed away at his home surrounded by family on Thursday, October 5, 2022.
Born in Frederick, MD on December 5, 1931, he was the son of the late William Earl Burdette and Ollie May Keyser Burdette. He grew up in Washington DC and always shared wonderful stories about being raised by his grandmother, Nellie Everett Burdette and grandfather, Josie G. Burdette.
Gene was a devoted family man. His greatest source of pride and joy were his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He and Nancy were actively involved, never missing a game, birthday party, or celebration. Family was the center of Gene's life.
He graduated from Eastern High School in Washington DC and worked a few jobs before launching Burdette Builders Construction where he worked alongside his son, Ben Burdette, for over 50 years. He was a skilled craftsman who loved to build things, his legacy can be seen throughout Frederick County.
Gene enjoyed attending and volunteering for the Frederick High School sports programs serving as the timekeeper for football and basketball games for decades. He was an avid Orioles fan and was very fond of camping, golf, fishing, and really any sport.
Since 1958, Gene was a faithful and active member of the First Baptist Church of Frederick County, where he served as a trustee and deacon fostering many close and long-lasting friendships. He had a passion for travel, taking many trips across the country and Canada with Nancy and his family visiting historic sites and national parks.
He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Nancy Buchanan Burdette, and six of their seven children, Terry Barnhart (Greg), Robin Burdette, Rebecca Burdette, Ben Burdette, Jennifer Burdette, and Matt Burdette (Cindy); 12 grandchildren: Janet Kline (Derek), Sara Williams (Zack), Laura Schug (Chris), Jason Krantz, Derek Krantz, Brandon Krantz (Nichole), Matthew Krantz (Anna), Nicholas Brango (Carly), Alexis Brango, Robert Burdette (Lindsay), Alyson Pyles (Christopher), Emily Burdette, and many great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three siblings Sue Ann Sanbower (Robert), Frances Ausherman (Curtis), and Joe Burdette (Jackie).
He was preceded in death by his son, Scott Burdette and siblings, Mary Evelyn Wills and Jerry G. Burdette.
Family will receive friends and family at Keeney & Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick, MD from 2-4 pm on Sunday October 9. Family will receive friends and family at the First Baptist Church, 7040 Bowers Road, Frederick, MD 21702 from 10-11 am on Monday October 10 followed immediately by the service. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Frederick County (www.bgcfc.org) or the First Baptist Church of Frederick, 7040 Bowers Road, Frederick MD 21702.
