Edith Trutzenberger Shankle, 88, of Winchester, VA, passed away on June 24, 2023. Edith was born on August 25, 1934, in Heilbronn, Germany. She was the beloved wife of the late Earle Shankle.
Edith and her late husband were the proud owners of Shankle Body in Hyattsville, MD, for many years. She was also the owner and operator of The Eaglesnest Ceramic shop in Frederick, MD. She and Earle also had an ice cream shop in Augusta, WV. Edith was very active in the Republican Party and received many rewards and accolades for her dedication. She was a member of the Ruritan in Slanesville, WV.
When Edith found out the Wounded Warriors were struggling with sweatpants, she came up with a way using Velcro to make it easier. She sent many handmade blankets to soldiers overseas. She received an award for sensing holiday decorations to the Dining Facility in Iraq along with many CARE packages.
Edith is survived by her daughter Marlene St. Julien, son Edward Earl Johnston, grandson Edward Charles Johnston, grandson Kevin Michael Johnston, granddaughter-in-law Stacy St. Julien. She was preceded in death by her husband Earle Shankle.
A memorial viewing will be held on Wednesday, June 28, 2023, from 4:00 to 7:00 at the Keeney and Basford Funeral home, 106 E. Church Street, Frederick MD, 21701. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 29, 2023, at 11:00 am at the funeral. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
Rest in peace beloved Mom, Oma, Edith, you will be missed. Edith will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, dedication to her community and country. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends; however, her legacy will live on forever.
