Mrs. Dorothy Virginia “Dot” Shaff, 95, of Frederick, died Sunday, January 27, 2019 at Homewood at Crumland Farms surrounded by her loving family. She had been a Health Care resident at Homewood for the past seven and one-half years. The daughter of Anna Mae Ball Cavell and William Milton Cavell, she was born September 25, 1923 in the Best Farm house on the Monocacy National Battlefield in Frederick. Dorothy was married to Bernard L. “Bud” Shaff for 73 years. In addition to her husband, she is survived by daughter Janice, son James William “Bill” Shaff and wife Marilyn, daughter Patricia A. “Trish” Hill and husband Robert J, granddaughter Katherine A. “Katy” Hill Matvia and husband Joseph, grandson William P. “Billy” Shaff, and great-granddaughter Lily E. Shaff. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. Dot was predeceased by her siblings Albert Cavell, Ralph Cavell, Elsie Mitchell, Wilbur Cavell, and Edith Cavell. Dot enjoyed crafts of all kinds, including sewing, quilting, cross-stitch, making Santas, bears, and many other assorted crafts. Dot was a generous person who gave freely of her time and assistance to those in need. She never hesitated to provide whatever was needed by friends and neighbors - meals to shut-ins, visiting sick friends, providing transportation, or just “being there.” Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 2, 2019 at St. Luke’s Lutheran Cemetery, Feagaville, MD.
