Doris Jean Culler Summers died peacefully November 26 at the Kline Hospice House where she had been in their tender care.
Born May 4, 1932, in Frederick, Maryland, she was the daughter of Floyd L. Culler and Ora Moore Culler. She lived on Second Street, graduated from Frederick High School, Averett College in Danville, Virginia, and Hood College. She married H. Thomas Summers on June 6, 1953. The couple first made their home on Third Street, eventually building a house on Kline Blvd. where they lived for more than 30 years. Tom died at home on Mercer Court in 2018 and Doris lived quietly without him. She was a writer, painter, and avid gardener. She made fantastic holiday suppers, wrote children’s books with characters named for her grandchildren, and was proud to have been a past president of The Garden Club of Frederick. She was an enthusiastic and loving supporter of her children Tom, Julie, and Jonathan. In her final year she lived comfortably with her son Jon and grandson Joel.
She will be missed by grandson Ian Walker and wife Lauren, Frederick; Corey Walker and wife Sabrina, Washington, D.C.; granddaughter Kristin Woodring and husband Blair, Venice, California; Heather Summers, Manhattan; and Lindsay Summers and fiancé Eric Johnson, Columbus, Ohio; and Joel Summers, Frederick.
She was preceded in death by her brothers Floyd L. Culler Jr. and wife Della, Carl Culler and wife Virginia, her beautiful and beloved daughter-in-law Robin Summers, and niece Gay Petrlik. She will be remembered by many nieces and nephews and many good friends. Unlike her gregarious husband, our mother was a private person and requested only a small reception; on December 23 at Keeney-Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church Street, Frederick from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. we welcome you to share her memory. Inurnment will be private. No flowers please; memorial contributions may be made in Doris's name to the Kline Hospice House, 7000 Kimmel Road, Mt. Airy, MD 21771.
