Donald James Bell

Donald James Bell, 88, of New Market, MD, passed away on Saturday January 7, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Frostburg, MD on February 11, 1934, to the late Lewis James and Lola (nee Porter) Bell. He was the beloved husband of Paula Carolyn Bell.

Having graduated from the Beall High School in 1952, Don attended Frostburg State College and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in education in 1956, and subsequently obtained a Master's degree in education from the University of Maryland. Don taught middle school science for 10 years in the Montgomery County school system. He rose to the rank of principal in the Howard County school system – a position he retained for 20 years before retiring in 1986. After retirement, Don established a farm (Belcardon) and began breeding, raising, and training thoroughbred racehorses.

Don loved the outdoors and animals. He adamantly protected wildlife and was devoted to his array of pets over the years, especially his best buddy Mac. He enjoyed fly fishing and exploring back waters. Don was committed to feeding the local wildlife – even from the rear deck of his retirement community home.

In addition to his wife, Don is survived by his children; Brenda Bell Williams and Brad Bell (Leslie), his stepchildren Melody Stanhope (Steven) and Eric "Marty" Struble (Kim), his grandchildren; Justin Williams, Colin Stanhope, Megan El-Shafey (Robby), Ian Stanhope, Eric Struble, Jr., Carson Struble, and great-grandchild Leighla El-Shafey.  In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his grandson Nathan Bell. He will also be greatly missed by a host of life-long friends and extended family.

Family and friends can gather at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, P.A., 106 East Church Street, Frederick, MD 21701, on Sunday, January 15, 2023, from 2pm - 4pm. A second visitation will be held at the funeral homes on Monday, January 16, 2023, from 10am until the start of the funeral at 11am. Burial will take place on Tuesday, January 17, 2023, at 11am at the Frostburg Memorial Park Cemetery, 70 Green Street, Frostburg, MD 21532.
