David S. Weinberg

March 31, 1934 — September 14, 2023

David S. Weinberg passed away on September 14, 2023.  Born on March 31, 1934 to Manuel M. and Sylvia S. Weinberg, David was a lifelong member of the Frederick, MD community.  Upon his retirement, he split his time between Frederick and his home on Marco Island, FL.

David attended Frederick High School and Mercersburg Academy. Like many in the family, he attended Washington and Lee University in Lexington, VA. Following college, he graduated with a degree in law from the University of Maryland. He then returned to Frederick to join his father’s law practice, establishing the law firm of Weinberg & Weinberg, and practiced law in Frederick for over thirty years.

Along with his law practice, David had many and varied business endeavors from real estate development to an ownership interest in the original Red Horse Restaurant and later Motel to a founding partnership in Terrace Lanes Bowling Center for over sixty years. He was successful in the thoroughbred breeding and racing business, and was fortunate to watch his and his partners’ horses win many stakes races and run in both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness.

David’s philanthropic contributions to the Frederick community were also broad and generous. He was lifetime supporter of Hood College, Frederick Memorial Hospital, The Weinberg Center and many others.

Outside of family and friends, David’s greatest passion was for golf.  He was a very accomplished player, having won numerous local and club tournaments throughout his life.  At age 16 he qualified to play in the Hearst National Junior Championship in San Francisco, a tournament won two years prior by Arnold Palmer. In his mind his greatest accomplishment in golf was drawing even with his longtime golf partner and very good friend Mike McGinnis by capturing one-half of an MSGA title, the 1995 Maryland State Father-Son Championship.  No one in the gallery that day watching the sudden death playoff will soon forget the nine iron he striped to 15 feet on #2 at Holly Hills to set up the winning birdie.  Nor will his partner.

David is survived by his son, Rand Weinberg and wife Pam, his daughter Shelley Weinberg and wife Helga Varden. He is predeceased by his son Tod Weinberg. As a beloved grandfather, he leaves behind six grandchildren: Amelia Weinberg, Cody Weinberg, Madison Weinberg, Rebecca Weinberg, Sarah Weinberg, and Sherby Weinberg, three great-grandchildren, and his sister, Kathryn Levi.

The family would like to thank his extraordinarily conscientious in-home caregivers, Savannah Modine and Cheryl Young.

Funeral services were held graveside for family and close friends at Mt. Olivet Cemetery on September 18, 2023, where he now rests alongside Manuel, Sylvia and Tod.
