Curtis Bowen

August 7, 1932 — November 26, 2023

Curtis Augustus Bowen, a devoted husband, father, and community leader, passed away peacefully on November 26, 2023, at the age of 91. He was the son of the late Reverend Hilary Thomas and Leila May Bowen. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, on August 7, 1932, Curt leaves behind a legacy of service, dedication, and love.

Curtis is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Deloras Bowen, six children - Bonnie Gordon and husband Hugh, Sandy Der and husband Jack, Steve Bowen and wife Ellissa, Ken Bowen and wife Mary, Brad Bowen and wife Paula, Sherry Marinos and husband Mike, fourteen grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

His educational journey began at City High School, Class of 1950, followed by studies at Lynchburg College, the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy (Class of 1956), and the University of Maryland School of Medicine (Class of 1957). A proud member of Phi Delta Chi Fraternity, Curt showcased his musical talents in the annual talent competition.

Curtis's professional life was marked by excellence and commitment. From his role as an analytical chemist for the FDA (1956-1958) to pharmaceutical sales representative for Pfizer (1958-1960), and later managing Drug Center (1960-1964), Curt moved to Frederick, Maryland, in 1963. In partnership with Reese Whitesell, he co-founded Whitesell and Bowen Pharmacy in downtown Frederick, serving the community from 1964 to 1981. Following this, he managed and assisted in three Weis Pharmacy locations in Frederick, Maryland, and Martinsburg, West Virginia, until his retirement in 1995.

Curtis was not only a professional but also an active member of the Kiwanis Club of Frederick, his church and community. He served as an Elder in Calvary Methodist Church, Frederick, Maryland. His commitment extended beyond his professional and religious life, as demonstrated by his pivotal role as Co-Chair, alongside Peggy Pilgram, of The Frederick Operation Downtown Action. This project, initiated in 1974, aimed to revitalize downtown Frederick, and Curtis's devotion of thousands of volunteer hours played a crucial role in its success. The downtown area was transformed into a vibrant destination for shopping, dining, and recreation, with historic buildings given a new life.

In his leisure, Curt found joy in genealogical research, reading, music, and construction projects. He cherished family moments with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Colleagues remember Curtis Bowen for his dedication, friendship, and significant contributions to both the professional and civic life of Frederick. His impact on the community will be felt for generations to come.
