“Nannie” as she was known to both friends and family alike and was a staple in the community, working for decades at Southern States in Middletown and then Frederick until she retired at the age of 72 years- old. She was a devoted Christian, and a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Burkittsville. She supported local programs such as the Frederick County 4-H & Camp Center, Burkittsville Ruritan and the Open House at Southern States. Jean was an avid gardener and with eight children she spent a lot of time canning and taught generations how to prepare and preserve food. She rarely missed the Great Frederick Fair and was a dedicated volunteer to the 4-H Beef Dept, she was heavily involved in the sale and served as a show secretary for many years. She enjoyed attending all her children and grandchildren’s sporting and 4-H events.
She loved baking especially apple dumplings, pies and cookies for her family and local community fundraisers, the Country Kitchen through the church and various other causes. She enjoyed going to Bingo and her scratch-off tickets and puzzles which were popular presents from her many grandchildren. Jean was an avid duckpin bowler and bowled for many years in the Brunswick and Frederick leagues. Nannie will be remembered for her deep love of family, instilling the importance of family traditions in all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She hosted weekly Sunday dinners for the entire extended family for over fifty years, a custom which continues today.
