Charles “Sonny” Edward Winpigler, Jr., 88, of Frederick, passed away on Thursday, March 13, 2025, at his residence. He was the loving husband of Peggy Winpigler for 67 years.
Born July 19, 1936 in Frederick, he was the son of the late Charles Sr. and Inez Winpigler.
He was an avid sports fan with a love of the Redskins, Senators/Nationals, and MD Terps. While playing neighborhood pickup games of baseball with his brother David, he met and fell in love with Peggy. He made three trips with his son to the Super Bowl, all of which the Redskins won. He passed his love of all sports on to all of his grandchildren and great grandchildren; they were his greatest pride and joy. He was always one of their biggest fans, carrying their Baseball Cards in his wallet always, and attending any games he could possibly make it to. He was often found with them in baker park fishing, feeding the ducks, riding bikes, playing sports, playing harmonica, imitating Donald Duck, making milkshakes and homemade soft serve ice cream, and giving the best leg rubs for all of their growing pains.
A master of driving absolutely anything, from backhoes to dump trucks or even tractor trailers. Before he was old enough to have a license, he was making trips to DC and Baltimore with other drivers just to back their trucks into the loading docks for them. In his international backhoe, he was described as someone who could pick up a dime from the blacktop without leaving a scratch.
He is survived by his daughter, Linda Johnson, son, Chris Winpigler (Melissa), grandchildren, Lauren King (Patrick), Ashley Mason (Dan), Steven Johnson (Brittany), CJ Winpigler (Claire) , Nick Winpigler (Chloe) and Bradley Winpigler (Marilin), great-grandchildren, Aubrey, Bryce, Jake, Jenna, Riley, Carder, Magnolia and Amelia, brothers, Hubert, David, Adrian "Abe", Bion and Shawn, sisters, Judith Rice, Cynthia Ropp, Pamela Martin, Ramona Ridgely and Coral Keller, numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Rhea Whitworth and Audrey Baker.
