Carolee Everhart Stup

April 2, 1929 — June 20, 2024

Carolee Marita (Everhart) Stup was born in Frederick on April 2, 1929, the only child of Carroll and Mildred (Twentey) Everhart. She passed away June 20, 2024.

Carolee was always stylishly dressed by her mother, indulged by her father, and adored by both. Vivacious and charming from girlhood forward, she was known as sweet and fun loving and for her quick wit.

Her children cherish her stories about taking the trolley by herself from downtown Frederick to her grandparents’ house in Yellow Springs, riding her bike down South Market Street with no hands, and performing skating tricks at the Braddock Heights Roller Rink. Voted the beauty of the Frederick High School class of 1946, Carolee went on to win the crown in the Littlestown carnival beauty pageant. She knew her way around the dance floor and valued a partner who did, too.

Potomac Edison was Carolee’s first employer after high school. She married Eugene L. Stup in 1950 and, after time at home with three young children, she learned how to drive, put a second car in their driveway, and went off to work again. Over the years—into her 70s—she proved an asset as a secretary and administrative assistant at prominent Frederick businesses and law practices. Her fingers flew across the typewriter keys, no file cabinet went unorganized, and nary a misspelling or grammatical error escaped her eagle eye.

Carolee appreciated beauty in many forms—clothing, flowers and plants, art, interior design—and had impeccable taste. A repeat customer at such dress shops as Haber’s, Connie’s, and later Talbots, she was a fashionista before the word was coined. She made her home on Shookstown Road a wonderful place for her family to grow up.

Later, on her own, Carolee brought her innate taste to her apartments and treasured condo in the Whittier community. In August 2019, she moved to the Record Street Home in Frederick. Although the adjustment was difficult at first, it wasn’t long before she felt comfortable. Carolee’s room was a model for prospective residents. She established friendships and became involved in resident activities such as jigsaw puzzles, exercise, bingo (with three cards), and Wii bowling, the last of which earned her the title “Striker.” She loved to play double solitaire. Carolee frequently declared that “everyone is so nice” at Record Street Home. Her family is grateful for the care and affection she received there.

Her children were Carolee’s greatest joy. She celebrated their successes and provided unwavering support when they faced challenges. All three told her often that she was “the best mother in the world”—and they meant it. To her son, she was a loving and accepting mother with a great sense of humor. To her girls, she was a best friend who regularly completed their threesome on shopping expeditions and house and garden tours.

Carolee is survived by her children and their spouses, Marita Stup Loose (Rick), Cristy Stup (Erin Jenkins), Barry Stup (Moira Weldon); grandchildren Cara Loose Schroll (Ben), Annie Stup (Simon Moore), Taylor Jenkins Grewe (Phillip), Quinn Jenkins, and Leah Stup; and great grandchildren Ella and Lucy Schroll, Lorna and Eamon Moore, Tate Grewe, and another great granddaughter to be born in August.

In addition to her parents, Carolee was predeceased by her special aunt Eloise Twentey Himes and niece Pat Himes Burns, who were like sisters to her, and long-time friend Betty Eyler Rice. Her dog Maddy was a faithful companion.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Carolee’s life on Monday, August 5, 4:30-7:00 pm at the Delaplaine Arts Center, 40 S. Carroll Street, Frederick, Maryland.

Contributions in Carolee’s memory may be made to the Record Street Home, 115 Record Street, Frederick, Maryland 21701.
