Carol Lynn Markey

August 13, 1955 — August 25, 2024

Mrs. Carol Lynn Markey, 69, of Frederick, passed away Sunday, August 25, 2024. She was the loving wife of Peter "Pete" Markey for 44 years.

Born August 13, 1955 in Frederick, she was the daughter of Caroline Feaga and the late Garland Feaga. And before we get too far, we know she’d want you to read this with a smile and, if possible, some sunshine. As a kid, on Grant Place she developed lifelong bonds with the neighborhood kids and her passion for nature and artistry began to grow. After high school she moved to Ocean City, to be with her first love - the beach, while she was waiting to start college for fashion design. A tragic accident forced her to return to Frederick. It was then that she met Pete, the future love of her life. They began to build a life with Carol’s dog Shawn and her extensive collection of house plants. Pete and Carol moved into a stone farmhouse on Ford Rd, which had a blacksmith shop in the rear, but no running water, or other modern amenities. Carol cooked their meals on a wood fired stove and Pete heated the house with a fireplace he built himself. They had goats, chickens, dogs, a garden, an outhouse, and lots of love. Remember, this is 1978 not 1878! After two years, they moved to their forever home on Edgewood Church Rd, which was another house from the 1850s, but it had some major luxury upgrades, such as, running water, an electric stove, and room for their family to grow. They got married on Feb 29, 1980, a clever ploy by Pete to keep anniversary costs low, and their 3 children were born over the next seven years. Being a mom was Carol’s true passion. She always put her family first. She welcomed all to her home and created a safe haven for her children and her children’s friends.

Carol (also lovingly known as Bessie, Quay and Meeka) will be remembered for her love of plants, the outdoors, dogs, arts & crafts, and games of Uno with her grandkids. Her innate creativity was shown in her sewing projects, her clothing, her garden, cooking, and her never ending home projects. She enjoyed watching Wheel of Fortune, taking pontoon boat rides on the Potomac River with the Kellys, dancing to live music, baking in the sun, and watching her kids and grandchildren excel in life. Carol was blessed with her best friend, Nannette Markey. The two spent hours talking, laughing, and sharing the joys and challenges of life. Carol was humble and kind and treated everyone she met as an equal. Her long squeezing hugs and her beautiful smile will always be remembered. Help us keep Carol’s memory alive by hugging often and hugging like you mean it!

Towards the end of Carol’s life, she displayed an enormous amount of fight. She battled back after heart surgery and intensive stays in the hospital. Against all odds, she made it home and earned the nickname “Miracle Girl’ by her hospice nurses. And the “Miracle Girl” she was. She was able to enjoy the last two months of her life visiting her favorite places and reconnecting with her friends and family.

In addition to her husband and mother, Carol is survived by her children; Kendall White (Jeremiah), Neil Markey and Luke Markey (Barbie), grandchildren; Celia White, Elliott White, Bennett White, Davis White, Grove Markey and Capri Markey, sister; Sharon Lillard (Jim), and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family welcomes donations to Sophie and Madigan’s Playground or to the Sgt. David J. Smith Memorial Fund as an expression of sympathy instead of flowers.

The family will receive friends from 12 to 2 on Saturday, September 7 at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church Street, Frederick. The memorial service will immediately follow. A celebration of life is being planned for a later date.
