Carleton “B” Hayek, 90, of Frederick, MD passed away Friday, August 2, 2019. Born September 13, 1928, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, “B” is survived by his wife Shirley, to whom he was married 69 years.
After “B”s family made its way east from Iowa, they settled in Baltimore where “B” met Shirley at a neighborhood recreation center dance. That was it. They became a couple for life. A member of “the greatest generation,” “B” served as a corporal in the army during the Korean War, then returned home to start a family.
After earning his bachelor’s degree from Johns Hopkins University, “B” became a skilled graphic artist who used paint brushes, air brushes and colored pencils to design actual size bottle caps, labels and cosmetic bottles. He worked for Gamse Lithograph and Carr-Lowrey Glass Company in Baltimore. Later he served as Graphic Arts Specialist for the State of Maryland’s Department of General Services. There he managed a team that designed publications and special events visuals.
But “B”s first love was his family. He spent most of his spare time with his wife and boys at their home in Ellicott City—watching the kids play sports, grilling in the backyard, taking hikes, raking giant leaf piles in the fall, and loading up the station wagon for epic road trips to national parks and sights across the U.S.
The family grew. First with daughters-in-law, and then grandchildren. Some of the grandkids called “B” Poppy. Others called him “B-paw.” But they all loved him, and going to their grandparents’ house to swim in the pool and spend time with cousins was always a highlight of the weekend. “B” loved those days at the pool.
After retiring, Shirley & “B” traveled the world with friends and had a blast buying and selling collectibles at their own booth in an antique mall. Their collectibles business was the perfect hobby for two people who were crazy in love for a lifetime.
Basically, “B” Hayek loved life—for more than nine decades.
Besides his wife Shirley, “B” is survived by his sister Phyllis of Pittsgrove, NJ; brother Jack of Danbury, CT; his children Scott (and his wife Heidi), Brian (and his wife Robin) and Brad who all live in the area; and five grandchildren-Sam, Randy, Bailey, Ross and Evan. He is preceded in death by a sixth grandchild, Jeff; his daughter-in-law Libby; another sibling, Gwen of Cape Coral, FL; and his parents Carleton J. and Herma Hayek of Rancocas Woods, NJ.
Visitation with family and friends will be from 10-11:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 17, followed by a short memorial service. Both will be held at the Keeney and Bassford P.A., Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St. in downtown Frederick, MD. Pastor Art Monroe will officiate the service. A private family burial of “B’s ashes will take place at later date.
