Barbara Weaver Batdorf, 91, died December 16, 2023, in Frederick, MD, after a courageous battle with dementia. Mrs. Batdorf, the daughter of the late Reverend William Merval and Goldie Chandlee Weaver, was born in Philadelphia, PA on November 22, 1932.
A distinguished graduate of Frederick High School and Hood College in Frederick, Barbara was a trailblazer as part of the first group of women to enroll at Harvard University when the Harvard School of Education became coeducational.
After earning her Master’s degree from Harvard University, Mrs. Batdorf returned to Frederick County to follow her passion of teaching children how to read, where she worked first as an elementary school teacher, and then as a Reading Specialist, in the Frederick County School System for 25 years until her retirement.
Barbara's impact extended beyond the classroom as she played a pivotal role in establishing the FOCUS program between Hood College and the Frederick County School System. She also received the Hood College Charles Tressler Outstanding Teacher Award.
Barbara was also a lifelong member of the Frederick Presbyterian Church, where her father served as Pastor for over 25 years. She contributed significantly to the Church during her life including singing in both the Children’s and Senior Choirs, serving on the Women’s Associated Committee, and and holding roles as a Deacon, Elder, Christian Educational Committee Chairperson, and Church Historian.
Mrs. Batdorf was also an active Board Member for the Record Street Home for many years.
Barbara cherished her role as a devoted wife, mother, sister, and grandmother, as well as a passionate gardener and cook. She is survived by her beloved husband of 64 years, Jack, her brother, John Chandlee Weaver (Judy), her daughter, Ann, and her sons Mark (Holly) and John (Susan). Barbara's legacy lives on through her three granddaughters, Kaidyn, Kate, and Addisyn, along with numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held at Frederick Presbyterian Church, 115 W. 2nd Street, Frederick, MD 21701 on Saturday, January 20th at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Frederick Presbyterian Church.
