James Larry Akers

Mr. James Larry Akers, 71, of Charles Town, W.Va., died Tuesday, May 4, 2010, at Frederick Memorial Hospital, after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of 50 years to Norma Jane Best Akers. Born June 7, 1938, in Covington, Va., he was the son of the late James Lucas Akers and Ruby Ethel Snead Akers. He was a longtime employee of General Motors, retiring from Delphi in 2001 after 36 years, mostly as a supervisor. Mr. Akers and his wife resided in Wilson, N.Y., while working, frequently returning to Frederick to visit family and friends. He enjoyed golfing and was an avid guitar player, having an ear for blues music. He was a Freemason, serving as past Master at Ontario Lodge 376 F&AM, Wilson, N.Y., and was a past president at the Wilson Lions Club, N.Y. In addition, he was a member of Exley United Methodist Church, Wilson, N.Y., and was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, Charles Town, W.Va. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, John Allen Akers and his wife, Pamela, of Woodbine; daughter, Jamie Suzanne Holler and her husband, Joseph, of Waxhaw, N.C.; as well as four grandchildren. He is also survived by brothers, Vernon W. Akers, and his wife, Connie, and Herbert W. Akers, and his wife, Karol; and multiple nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his sister, Anne Akers; and brother, Harold N. Akers. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, May 6, at Keeney and Basford, P.A., Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, May 7, in the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the funeral home, with the Rev. Richard Kroll officiating. Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Asbury UMC Building on Blessings Fund, 110 W.
