Mrs. Elizabeth "Betsy" Ellen nee Baxter Cavanaugh, age 63, of Middletown died on Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at The University of Maryland Medical Center. She was the wife for just over 41 years of Robert "Bob" Francis who she married on November 28, 1969 in Chapel #1 at Lowry AFB, Denver. Born on October 4, 1947 in East Islip, New York she was the daughter of Samuel Baxter and his late wife Helen (Swihura) Baxter.
Betsy was a 1965 graduate of Trinity High, Georgetown, MD and a 1969 alumnus of Marycrest College, Davenport, IA. Her MA degree was from Hood College. After college Betsy was a Red Cross worker at Beale AFB, Marysville, CA. Her husband was assigned there during the Vietnam War. She was assigned to the Family Service Unit. At the end of the war she began her 36 years teaching career with Frederick County Public Schools. She taught at South Frederick Elementary and Middletown Middle School. Betsy was a founding member and active parishioner at Holy Family Catholic Community in Middletown. She and her husband were the first social members of Hollow Creek Golf Club. Betsy enjoyed tennis, golf, was an avid reader, and enjoyed decorating her home and entertaining in it. She shared her husband's passion for travel.
Mrs. Cavanaugh is survived by two sisters, Nancy Seiss and husband Wayne of Millersville, MD; Janie Bryden and husband Jerry, of Axle, TX; a brother Steven and wife Susan Baxter of Woodbine, MD. Also surviving are nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, January 15, 2011 from 10 to 12 Noon at Holy Family Catholic Community, 7321 Burkittsville Road, Middletown, MD 21769 where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12 Noon. Monsignor Robert J. Jaskot and Father John Moore pastor emeritus will concelibrate. The interment will follow at the Christ Reformed United Church of Christ Cemetery, Middletown. Memorial contributions may be made to The Cavanaugh Memorial Scholarship Fund, care of The Community Foundation of Frederick County, 312 E. Church St., Frederick, MD 21701 or by going to www.cffredco.org for the endowment fund established by the Cavanaugh estate to provide scholarships, as well as financial aid for students going to college that have graduated from Middletown High School or to Holy Family Catholic Community at the above address.
