Raymond Cook, Jr

Mr. Raymond Cook Jr., 77, of Frederick and most recently of Homewood at Crumland Farms, passed away Monday, June 21, 2010. He was the was the husband of the late Holly Cook. Born Aug. 6, 1932, in Frederick, he was the son of the late Raymond Sr. and Lillian May Fogle Cook. Following his graduation from Frederick High School at 17 years of age, Mr. Cook signed a major league baseball contract with the former St. Louis Browns. However, his professional baseball career was cut short due to his enlistment in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Upon returning from Korea, he began his 40-year career with the federal government. He was first employed at Fort Detrick and then later at Health and Human Services in Rockville as a printing supervisor. Mr. Cook was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church. He also was a member of the FSK American Legion. In his younger years, he was an avid bowler. He was a lifelong and loyal Philadelphia Phillies fan. Surviving are his daughter, Lori Heslin and her husband, Thomas, of Keymar; his son, Richie Cook and wife, Theresa, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and grandchildren, William and Julia Heslin of Keymar, Kevan and Brian Cook of St. Petersburg, and Steven Bailey and his wife, Erica, of Minot, N.D., and their children, Elora, Derek and Dylan. Mr. Cook is also survived by three sisters, Betty Reynolds of Frederick, Elizabeth Angelberger and husband, Monroe, also of Frederick, and Nancy Beachley and her husband, Melvin, of Greencastle, Pa.; and many nieces and nephews. He will also be remembered by his former wife, Virginia Cook. Mr. Cook was preceded in death by two brothers, Wilbur and Elmer Cook. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, June 28, at Keeney and Basford, P.A., Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Services will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 29, from the funeral home chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services. Officiating will be the Rev. Marina C. Flores. Entombment will be in the Mount Olivet Mausoleum. Expressions of sympathy may be shared with the family at KeeneyBasford.com.
