Mrs. Mary Emma Covell, 86, of Frederick, passed away Monday, May 3, 2010, at Glade Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Walkersville. She was the wife of the late Jonathan Forrest Covell, who died in August 1985. They were married for 39 years. Born in Urbana on Oct. 2, 1923, she was a daughter of the late Charles Tyson and Carrie Plunkard Brandenburg. Mrs. Covell was a homemaker and devoted most of her life to her family, children and grandchildren. She enjoyed taking care of children, cooking, canning, sewing, quilting and crocheting. She was known for her red velvet cakes and kinklings. Mary was also known for her gardening and was especially proud of her dahlias. She was a member of the Flint Hill United Methodist Church and attended Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. Surviving is one daughter, L. Jean Rhinehart and husband, Ed, of Urbana, two sons, Thomas B. "Tom" Covell and wife, Maria (Iedje), of Frederick, and Jonathan W. "Jack" Covell and wife, Donna, of Clear Spring; two brothers, Ira Brandenburg and wife, Peggy, of Clarksburg, Norman Brandenburg and wife, Mary, of Adamstown; three sisters, Edythe Harshman and husband, Harold, of Mount Airy, Gloria McFadyen, of Urbana, and Martha Norwood and husband, Otis, of Urbana; six granddaughters, Lauri Rhinehart Beasley, Kelly Jo Woodard, Carrie Lynn DeLauter, Claudia (Mientje) Covell, Jennifer Voltaggio and Michelle Ziemer; nine great-grandchildren, Paige Covell, Derek DeLauter, Zachary, Jonathan and Emily Woodard, Gage and Burke Beasley, Elena Hocker and Thacher Voltaggio; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. She will also be remembered by many special friends and caregivers, including Dawn Heller and Helen Burdette. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Upton and Marshall Brandenburg; and two sisters, Betty Jane Brandenburg and Barbara Ann Payne. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, May 6, at Keeney and Basford, P.A., Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 7, in the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the funeral home. The Rev. George Tuggle, pastor of Flint Hill United Methodist Church, and the Rev. Sandra L. Phillips, pastor of Wesley Chapel, will officiate. Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick. Active pallbearers will be grandsons-in-law: Keith Beasley, David Woodard, Scott DeLauter, Chris Hocker, Bryan Voltaggio and Rhys Ziemer. Honorary bearers will be great-grandsons: Zachary Woodard, Jonathan Woodard, Gage Beasley, Derek DeLauter and Thacher Voltaggio.
