Dr. Adel Demiray of Frederick, Maryland died on the morning of December 29, 2010.
Adel Demiray was born on November 20, 1923 in Aleppo, Syria. For his education, he was sent to Istanbul, Turkey, over a thousand miles away from his family beginning at age seven. After completing medical school at the University of Istanbul and his military service, he came to the U.S. in 1951 to continue his medical training in Kansas City, Missouri. He did his residency in general and plastic surgery and ultimately became chief resident.
In 1959, he came to Frederick, where he built a very large, busy and successful practice. He truly loved medicine as well as working with his colleagues at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was Frederick County's first board certified surgeon. According to Dr. James B. Thomas, "Adel brought modern surgery to Frederick." He served as chief of staff for Frederick Memorial Hospital for five years. He retired in the early 1990's because of his hearing problems.
After retirement, he enjoyed the remainder of his life living on his farm, taking regular trips to Europe, reading and meeting his grandchildren. Throughout the rest of his life, he continually met former patients or patient's families who thanked him for his work. Surviving Dr. Demiray are his two sons, Sami and David, his daughter-in-law Sonia and three grandsons, Alexander, Elliott and Ian.
Memorial Services will be held this Saturday, January 8th at Keeney & Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church Street, Frederick, at 11 AM preceded by a reception for friends starting at 10 AM.
