Gordon C. Gamble

April 20, 1925 — January 2, 2011

Mr. Gordon C. Gamble, age 85, of Frederick, passed away on Sunday, January 2, 2011 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the loving husband of Mary Elizabeth (Sundergill) Gamble, who he married on December 12, 1947. Born on April 20, 1925, he was the son of the late Ellsworth and Hope (Clark) Gamble.

Mr. Gamble graduated from Los Angeles High School in 1942. He served the United States by enlisting in the Navy in July of 1942 serving until August of 1964 after 22 years of service. Mr. Gamble then worked for NIH as a Chief of the Department of Environmental Sanitation, retiring in August of 1978. He was a member of Saint John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, Frederick, serving as an usher during early Mass. He was a member of the Civitan Club of Frederick, holding all club offices, and was a Fellow, Chesapeake District of Civitan, holding a Club Honor Key. He was also a member of the Fleet Reserve Association-Branch 182, the Retired Officers Association, NARFE and was a former member of the Fort Detrick All-Service Retiree Council. He was an avid NASCAR fan who enjoyed attending the races at Richmond, Martinsville and Dover with his family.

In addition to his wife Mary, Mr. Gamble is survived by his children, Deborah G. Shaff, of Frederick, Christopher L. Gamble and wife Marsha of Dana Point, California, and Judith G. Cody of Brunswick. He was the grandfather of Lara E. Gamble, Eleah B. Gamble, Nathaniel P. Cody, and Sarah N. Longshore and Leah E. Longshore. He is preceded in death by his brother Ellsworth and his sister Reva.

Friends will be received at the Keeney & Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick on Tuesday, January 4, 2011 from 3 to 5 and from 7 to 9 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at Saint John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 112 E. Second St., Frederick on Wednesday, January 5, 2010 at 11 AM.
